Why we should be happy the US is the sole superpower

By Rasheed Abou-Alsamh, Arab News Staff

Anger and resentment among some in the Muslim world has been growing at the US military campaign in Afghanistan aimed at toppling the Taleban regime and rooting out Osama Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda fighters. To these Muslims, the American attacks are an attack on themselves and their religion, something President Bush and other American leaders have tried hard to deny.

As a supporter of the US campaign in Afghanistan, I was recently surrounded by fellow Muslims in my office and grilled as if I were George W. Bush’s personal envoy. Out of this experience I have decided to go through each grievance and try to come up with an explanation of the US position. Here it goes:

I predict this poor guy will have to move several times in the next few years...these people are delusional. He must feel like a sane man in an insane asylum.

No, he won't. What most people in the U.S. fail to understand about the more "modernized" nations of the Middle East like Saudi Arabia, is that they have a pretty sizeable middle class made up of professionals and office workers that go to work from nine to five (or what passes for it in the Eastern world) every day just like millions of Europeans, North and South Americans, and Asians.

These are not the people you see rioting in the streets, burning effigies, signing up for terrorist camps, etc. They're educated and they understand the notion of argument and debate that doesn't include violence at the end.

If you email this guy with your concerns, he would think you quaint and humorous.

The Sept. 11 attacks are linked to the US policy of relentlessly supporting Israel’s vicious repression of Palestinians!

Total BS!! If this were the case, why then are islamic jihadists massacering Christians by the thousands in Indonesia, Phillipines, Sudan, etc. Radical islam is a cruel, savage malignancy within the human fabric. They get along with no one. When there are no "infidels' to massacre, they massacre one another. Who the hell actually needs them??
