Northrop Grumman Pitches 30,000-Pound Guided Bomb To Air Force Fri Dec 14 2001 10:40:25 ET Northrop Grumman has briefed Air Force officials on a concept to field a 30,000-pound guided weapon, called 'Big BLU,' that could be used as a penetrator to destroy hardened targets that may house enemy leaders or weapons of mass destruction, DEFENSE DAILY reported on Friday. The proposal may gain favor with the Pentagon as the military tries to kill Al-Qaeda leaders holed up in Afghan caves. An Air Force official said, however, that the weapon will have significant cost and schedule hurdles associated with aircraft integration, is only a concept and is not envisioned for use during the Afghan conflict.

It'll probably be ready for Iraq.

30,000!?!
That is one Big Bomb...

How're they gonna deliver it? The tooling doesn't exist to manufacture the first 2 stages of the
Saturn V anymore! :-)
To: Husker24
Old news. This has been going on since the opening salvos of this conflict. A C5 will deliver the goods.

Good point. The present BLU can only be effectively delivered if the skies are clear and there isn't a risk of AA fire or missles.

This is interesting in that the physical devestation caused probably is equal to the earliest atomic bombs [TNT equiv]...
But to even consider a tactical nuke of the same size of this proposed big blu would be out of the question...
To: XpandTheEkonomy
Well, I think the after-effects of a Big Blu will be a good deal less to worry about than those of a tactical nuke. ;-)

The effective distance only grows as the 3d root of the weight. Many smaller bombs are a more effective approach, pound for pound. The terror value would be great, however.

15 tons is not equal to 30 kilotons by a bunch.
Kiloton:
NOUN: abbr. kt 1. A unit of weight or capacity equal to 1,000 metric tons. 2. An explosive force equivalent to that of 1,000 metric tons of TNT.

Northrop Grumman pitches 30,000 lb "Big BLU"They didn't pitch it very far. 15 tons is pretty heavy for even a Marine. It'll never make it as a grenade.
