TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND FREEDOM?
TUNXIS TRAILBLAZER | November/December 2001 | Luis Neves

It's unfortunate that a fear factor is ruling our lives. This fear factor is being generated by our government, the media, and a majority of people who've decided that blindly following our leaders is an act of patriotism. The media gives us government censored coverage of the "War on Terrorism." They've decided to ignore the questions we all should be asking.

Well, I've got a few questions I would like answers to. I've been following much of what has happened before and after September 11th. It's troubling to me that much of the information I've gleaned from international news sources has never, to my knowledge, been disseminated in the US.

I'll list the ones that trouble me the most (information from www.copvcia.com):

Summer 2001--Pakistani ISI (Intelligence) Chief General Mahmud orders an aide to wire transfer $100,000 to Mohammed Atta who was, according to the FBI, the lead terrorist in the suicide hijackings. Mahumud recently resigned after the transfer was disclosed in India and confirmed by the FBI. (Source: The Times of India, October 11, 2001)

July 2001--Three American officials: Tom Simmons (former U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan), Karl Inderfurth (former Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian affairs) and Lee Coldren (former State Department expert on South Asia), meet with Taliban reprsentatives in Berlin and tell them that the U.S. is planning military strikes against Afghanistan in October. Also present are Russian and German intelligence officers who confirm the threat. (Source: The BBC, September 18, 2001, the Guardian, September 22, 2001.)

August 2001--Russian President Vladimir Putin orders Russian intelligence to warn the U.S. government "in the strongest possible terms" of imminent attacks on airports and government buildings. (Source: MS-NBC interview with Putin, September 15.)

September 11, 2001--Gen Mahmud of the ISI, friend of Mohammed Atta, is visting Washington on behalf of the Taliban. (Source: MS-NBC, Oct.7.)

September 11, 2001--From 8:15AM until 9:05AM, with it widely known within the FAA and the military that four planes have been simultaneously hijacked and taken off course, no one notifies the President of the United States. It is not until 9:30 that any Air Force planes are scrambled to intercept, but by then it is too late. This means that the National Command Authority waited 75 minutes before scrambling other military aircrafts, even though it was known that four simultaneous hijackings had occurred--an event that has never happened in history. (Sources: CNN, ABC, MS-NBC, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times.)

November 18, 2001--At least 15 federal agencies have yanked potentially sensitive information off the Internet, or removed Web sites altogether, for fear that terrorists could exploit the government data. The exised material ranges from information on chemical reactors and risk-management programs to airport data and mapping of oil pipelines...

The Government Printing Office has begun ordering about 1,300 libraries nationwide that serve as federal depositories to destroy government records that federal agencies say could be too sensitive for public consumption. (Source: The Los Angeles Times)

In our attempt to be patriotic, we've allowed ourselves to be duped out of many rights and privileges we used to have. Our leaders have recently passed many laws that invade our privacy, give them greater police powers, and remove knowledge and information, once taken for granted, from public availability. All of this has happend without much, or any coverage from the press.

I would like our leaders to respond to these reports and to explain them, if possible. I also hope that we stop allowing ourselves to be blindly guided by fear, our media, and our leaders. To those of you who think me unpatriotic, I say this. Our nation stands for Truth, Justice, and Freedom. These things are in very short supply these days, and they are what I really want.

I take a class every now and then at this community college.

In my opinion, most of the articles in the Tunxis Trailblazer are pretty lowbrow, I usually have to walk by the stack of Trailblazers a few times before I get the courage to pick one up for fear I may blow a gasket.

It seems as if the staff has toned things down a bit since they received a few complaints about making anti-American comments.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this but I thought that some of you would be interested in catching a glimpse inside a young man's mind and perhaps offer some advice, direction, encouragement, whatever...

I've lurked for years, this is my first post. I apologize in advance for any errors.
