LOS ANGELES (AP) - Rep. Nancy Pelosi, a high-ranking Democrat, has endorsed Rep. Gary Condit in his bid for re-election.
Pelosi, D-San Francisco, issued a statement Monday saying that she supports Condit in the March 5 primary, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. The pledge may have added weight within party ranks as Pelosi becomes the House's minority whip next month.

Sacramento Bee president and publisher Janis Besler Heaphy delivered an address at Arco Arena on Saturday on the subject of the threats posed to civil liberties by the federal government's investigation of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Heaphy raised questions about racial profiling, limits on civil rights and the establishment of military tribunals. The audience interrupted the speech with booing and stomping.
Heaphy finally left the stage before completing her address.
The speech was the hot topic on the CSUS campus and on local talk radio Monday, with many saying the graduation was not the appropriate forum for such a speech.
University president Donald Gerth supported Heaphy.
"I had not read her remarks in advance. I did read them afterwards. It was a thoughtful, well prepared address, it came together, and I was disappointed our students, our graduates, didn't have a chance to hear it in its entirety, " Gerth said.
Gerth also blamed relatives and friends of the graduates for the rowdy behavior at the commencement.
"The heckling was essentially done by guests of the university, not by students," he said.
Some students challenged that assessment.
"It's almost sounding as if we have a bunch of radical families. The word heckling and things like that make it seem like we just had a group of rowdy people who didn't know how to contain themselves," student Kevin Fournier said.
Heaphy offered a statement Monday afternoon.
"Free speech in America involves saying what you believe. That's what I set out to do at graduation and why we published those remarks in full in The Sacramento Bee. My speech speaks for itself," the statement said.
Interesting, given Condit's apparent tastes.
This is not news. It IS business as usually for the DnC crowd.
My guess: Condit has the "Kinky" goods on a bunch of his fellow 'crats,
and is starting to call in his chits.
Well, THEY All SUPPORTED CLINTON, DIDN'T THEY....WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
Democrats are Immoral, EVIL people...anything to win power is their philosophy.
But she's the only voice of support I've heard from Washington democrats. The rest of them are remaining neutral through the primary...one report called that basically, supporting Condit's opponent.
Well the fact that none of them have spoken out sure does. But to answer your question, I would say yes. At least as far as the ones that voted for Miss P.

"Pelosi Withdraws Support for Condit"
"WASHINGTON- Rep. Nancy Pelosi, soon to be the second-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, has withdrawn her endorsement of Rep. Gary Condit's re-election bid.
In declaring her neutrality Thursday in the March Democratic primary in the 18th Congressional District, Pelosi aligned herself with other Democratic leaders who have refused to back Condit, a seven-term incumbent.
Her announcement earlier this week that she would support fellow Californian Condit against state Assemblyman Dennis Cardoza upset some Democrats who want the party to distance itself from Condit because of his involvement with missing intern Chandra Levy."
