Tolkien is deeply conservative, but not in any kind of belligerent or obnoxious way. And his conservatism goes back a long way. He hated automobiles and refused to ride in them. He hated machinery, modern architecture, etc., etc. He loved the country, woods, trees, fields, farms, cottages. He also loved beautiful cities, such as Gondolin, and he loved pubs.

There are reasons why he was immensely popular among hippies and back-to-nature freaks. One thing that says to me is that, although the environmental movement has been kidnapped by leftists, it is, or ought to be, a fundamentally a conservative thing. Too many Freepers want to repudiate environmentalism, when what we need to do is take it back from the leftists and the economic illiterates and restore it to what should be.

To take more of a stewardship role, perhaps?

The error the left makes is to worship the creation, not the Creator. And in worshiping the Creator, repecting his works of his Hands. This to me is an honorable enviormentalism.

Don't mind that he liked fields, trees, etc.

Strange that he refused to ride in a car, or hated machinery. I didn't know this. This is typical of commune-loving hippy types who want to regress rather than progress.

Remember, Pol Pot from Cambodia who forced everyone out of the city to go "back to nature". Not a nice philosophy to not believe in human progress.
