Has anyone looking at some of the MP motherboards? With 50 windows open it might be nice to have two processors available to process !

ok, computer whizzes, i bought the XP computer (nice!) and am trying to set up the home network with my old Win98 machine. Been working on it since last night, and both computers are showing the network, but neither computer seems to "see" the other one.

The XP computer came with an ethernet card. My hubby bought a Netgear SB104 Network Starter Kit which came with 2 network cards & a hub. I put the network card in the old machine, it says it's working properly. Hooked up all the cables, plugged in the hub, and ran the network connection wizard. It said it worked.

The hub seems to be connecting to both computers, it has a light at each connection, the light is lit if the computers are turned on, off if the computers are turned off.

So why can't my computers see each other? What do I do next? (I'm gonna be going back to work looking like Sinead O'Connor if this keeps up!)

Have you enabled internet connection sharing? I assume since you have only 2 computers if it keeps giving you trouble just take out the hub and go with a straight crossover cable connection. You are using patch cables to connect to the hub right?

The Networking Wizard configures the TCP/IP. I do have them both named to the same workgroup, and I've configured ICS.

They will NOT ping each other, which WINDOWS says is a hardware problem. However, the hub seems to be able to tell if each computer is turned on.

There is a cable from each network card to the wall, then there's a cable from the wall back to the hub. We're a little worried about the fact that we installed the connectors on each end of the wall cable...that might be the big OOPS?

Waiting for my son to finish burning a CD so that I can bring the old computer downstairs, and just run the cords that came with it back to the hub, to see if it works that way.

Or maybe I'll direct connect the 2, get my files off, and let him do without internet, since he's more interested in burning CDs than letting me work on it? :P~

You can share Internet connection with a direct cable connection. I do it all the time.

There are two types of cables. Patch cables and crossover cables. A patch cable has the same coler wire assigned to the same pin at each end. A crossover cable reverses the pins. To connect computer to computer you need crossover cables. For atttaching to a hub you need patch cables.

Note: since you're running this behind the walls use only one crossover cable. If you use 2 you'll swap the pins twice thus negating the purpose of using crossover cables.

But check to see if you have file sharing enabled on each computer.

Not enough info, yet.

What are the IP addresses of each machine?

What is the subnet mask?

Can you ping other computers (on the internet) from each?

Answer me those questions, and I'll tell you how to fix it. You do not need any other protocols - the fewer you can run with, the better. You should be able to run everything over tcp/ip. You definately DO NOT need IPX (Novel's protocol).

You should have bought another DELL. There's a good reason why they're kicking everyone's ass in the computer industry.

What are the IP addresses of each machine?

Just what the instructions said: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2

What is the subnet mask?

255.255.255.0

Can you ping other computers (on the internet) from each?

From the host, yes. The client, since the network isn't working, doesn't have internet access at the moment.

Did you install File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks in Network Properties?

There is an article here ZDNet Article about the Netgear package. It mentions that the setup on 95 didn't install the proper drivers. That would be the first place I'd look.

If it has the correct drivers, have you tried both Netgear cards in the old system? That would be my second place to investigate. Sometimes, you get bad hardware out of the box.

What kind of NIC is in the new box? It could be a conflict between it and the netgear. I've seen stranger things happen. Another possibility for investigative purposes would be to put the netgear NICs in both the boxes and see if that works.

Amelia,

I'm no expert here but I'm wondering if the IP addresses you're using may have been a misprint. My home network is using 192.168.1.xxx. It may be worth a try to change that ZERO you have to ONE.
