Democrats, in the name of tolerance, plan to demonize conservative Christians as being like the Taliban, according to an article in Newsweek.

Democrats "are planning a daring assault on the most critical turf in politics: the cultural mainstream," political correspondent Howard Fineman writes.

I think it says it all that the lady refers to the 2000 election as "Bush-Gore-Nader." What about Bush-Gore-Browne? Bush-Gore-Buchanan? Bush-Gore-[insert preferred candidate here]?

This plan of their's is going to work. I hate to be a pessimist, but when you look at the lack of clear thinking the average American has on most topics and the fact that Clinton was elected twice, it's hard for me to be optomistic. In a recent Barna survey, only 22% of Americans believe in an absolute truth. Some may question the survey's methodology, but the fact is, for most Americans, truth is what they feel about something. And really, who is better at manipulating people's emotions than the Democratic party?

. The Dems won't do it. They are not suicidal idiots. Whomever is pushing this scenario is on crack on this one IMO.

If by some chance the Democrats perpetrate this abomination, they will display that they are the suicidal maniacs = taliban, especially with that Neanderthal, Terry McCauliffe running the show. How in the hell did that guy ever become rich? He sure is dumb!!

I don't think this is an attempt to get at Christians (though it will have that end result). I think this is a clear attempt to bait the President, draw him out in anger, make him appear to be a "religious fanatic", etc. It's George W. Bush who is the target. He is, after all, the one who is giving them fits right now.

It's www.freerepublic.com, not www.CatholicRepublic.com

I'm not Catholic, but it seems to me that freerepublic.com implies that Catholics are as free to post here as anyone else.

This is very old news:

'GOP Taliban' tag riles Armey

By Jill Zuckman

Chicago Tribune Washington Bureau

Published November 14, 2001

WASHINGTON -- House Majority Leader Dick Armey erupted Tuesday after finding himself labeled part of "the Republican Taliban" in a U.S. News & World Report gossip item.

The item said some Democratic lawmakers have taken to referring that way to Armey (R-Texas), Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas).

"I don't think it's a damn bit funny," said Armey, who picked up the magazine when he got off an American Airlines flight from Dallas. "I don't think it's cute. It's certainly not responsible."

Despite a short period of intense, bipartisan action following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Democrats and Republicans have been at loggerheads over how to stimulate the economy, how to make airports more secure and whether to spend more money on national security.

Armey used the brief reference as an opportunity to blast the Democratic Party and the press: "I, for one, am deeply offended by the Democrats. It's disgusting."

He also called the language "ill-mannered and rude."

Armey said "it kind of rocked me" to discover that he is being equated with "the people trying to destroy this nation."

In the Senate, Lott shrugged off the label, describing "an amazing period" of cooperation with his Democratic colleagues since the terrorist attacks.

Since we're talking about Democrats, isn't it true that the majority of Catholics vote Democrat rather than Republican?

Only when pollsters don't distinguish between practicing Catholics and non-practicing. A majority of practicing Catholics vote Republican.

It isn't just the Democrats. There are any of a number of supposedly conservative posters here at FR who routinely refer to conservative Christians as "the American Taliban." It is almost always over the conservative Christian refusal to tolerate or celebrate homosexual behavior.

Such smear tactics have a long history. The pagan sodmoite Roman Emperor Nero used them, labelling Christians "enemies of mankind." It's a badge of honor to be smeared in this fashion for remaining faithful to one's beliefs.

Given the pro-sodomy mob zeal and fire that Hollywood, liberal Democrats, and atheist "anything goes" libertarians have spread throughout American culture, this could again be a successful tactic. It will be interesting to see how Bush responds to it.

The onslaught continues.

I totally agree. This crap might have passed before, but the democrats are changing their tune on issues like the military to prove it is them that is not out of the mainstream. What happened right after the most horrific attack on America? People flocked to the churches to pray and the Bible quickly became a best seller. This is just about the dumbest political plan I could think of barring something like outright support for Osama Bin Laden. I hope the democrats do this because its such a stinker, but I don't think they are that stupid.

While I agree with you, my fear is that as time separates us from 9/11, so will it separate us from our resolve.

When my middle son was in high school, three classmates were in a horrific automobile accident. The driver was a 15 year old girl without a license. She survived. One girl died (I can't remember the fate of the other girl). It was the weekend of a big high school dance and they were on their way to the mall to get their nails done.

This was in a village not far from Syracuse where traffic fatalities are big news (unlike metro Atlanta where traffic fatalities occur every single day). I remarked "I hope this makes them think before doing something stupid." The assistant principal (an ex-NY State Trooper) told me while the kids are upset and truly grieving, they are still teenagers. It quickly becomes abstract and once again they will go back to being teenagers and doing the stupid things teenagers do. He was right.

I am afraid that as more time passes, it will be easier for the dems to demonize Chrisitians. It isn't a new plan, after all, who wanted to hold bubba to high standards? The VRWC, of course. Bubba demonized anything on the "right" a long time ago.

Which is why it is important to never, ever forget 9/11. When the pain becomes distant, it is important to look at the pictures, the see the bodies falling from the air, to find the clips of those planes going into the WTC. Never, ever forget.

I believe they did their shake down cruise right here on FR

Your right. But we are told to expect that.

The most "religous" people in the world at the time of Jesus Christ, who had the Sciptures, but couldn't recognize the true Messiah, Killed Jesus Christ.

If you hold to the Scriptures and follow Jesus Christ, they will eventually kill you.

And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

The time will come that true bible believing christians will suffer for the gospels sake. Many times the people who did not like Christs Words tried to stone Him. Gods Words are powerful, thats why many "religions" do not use the bible for their finally authoriy. It exposes who they really are.

The bible is Jesus Christs final authority. If Gods enemies could only get rid of that book!!!...

As odd as this may sound, and I'm embarrassed to admit it, I have several yellow dog Democrats in my family. They just happen to be Christians and never miss church when the doors are open. The last presidential election just about did my 80 year old grandfather in. I don’t think he will be voting for them any more, even though he has voted for them for 60 years. He is what I would call a “Dixiecrat”. I don’t think he would tolerate it very much if “his” party labeled Christians as the “Taliban”. He threw a fit over that evil James Byrd commercial but still voted for Gore anyway. Maybe Democrats will dig their own grave with this one. There is always hope isn’t there?
