Malcolm Shabazz, the Malcolm X grandson who set the fire that killed his grandmother, has been arrested on robbery and burglary charges in Middletown, cops said.

Shabazz, 17, who lives in the small Orange County city, was arrested early Friday while riding in a stolen car, police said.

State police had been looking for Shabazz in connection with a Wednesday robbery.

Shabazz and Thomas Carter-Love, 17, of Wallkill are accused of assaulting another 17-year-old, robbing him of $100, threatening him with a gun, then going to the victim's home in Wallkill, stealing cash and assaulting him again. Carter-Love was arrested Wednesday.

Each was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of first-degree burglary and sent to Orange County Jail, pending a court appearance this week. Shabazz also was charged with a misdemeanor for giving police a fake name, cops said.

In 1997, Shabazz, then 12, pleaded guilty to arson and other charges for setting the fire that killed his 61-year-old grandmother, Betty Shabazz, widow of Muslim activist Malcolm X, in her Yonkers apartment.

He had been sent to juvenile detention facilities.

All prisoners should be kept seperate and supervised, no times for teaching each other "better" ways to commit crime.
