Alright, this is going to sound insensitive but it is the way it is. The guy went there of his own freewill and KNEW of the possible dangers that he would face. He went anyway.

If this unconfirmed report is true, and we all hope it is not, it's another case of reporters thinking that they expect special respect. It's no different than the case where those reporters couldn't wait to dash from Jalalabad to Kabul and were ambushed and killed on the road.

Neither you nor I would even consider for a moment arranging a meeting with a terrorist group in Pakistan. That would be a good way to get killed.

But I'm sure he thought that no one would dare do anything to a reporter from the Wall Street Journal.

He thought wrong.

The only meetings that should be arranged with terrorists are those that end up with the terrorists getting 72 virgins.

i thought there was something not quite ringing true with this story. now i really hope i'm right. if he was murdered there should be hell to pay, by the pakistani gov't. it's up to every civilized government to maintain law and order.

I would like to find out if he signed one of those waivers acknowledging the risks and the fact that he would be on his own if anything happened. I havent heard it talked about at all.

we sympathize with him, and we dont blame him entirely, but he does have to shoulder some of the blame. he was warned, he is not special, he is a western reporter in an evil quagmire. he knew the risk he was taking.

Perhaps now Sen. Clinton, who has made herself newly available on the TV talk show circuit since the World Trade Center attacks, will be asked whether she agrees with Olson that her husband's terrorist pardons "sent a signal."

Never in a million years.

The irony is he apparently died for a government he didn't like, if the reports about him are true.

His reports which were 'critical' of the US were written at the time x42 was sending cruise missles at empty tents and bombing aspirin factories in the Sudan. He was RIGHT to be critical, as most of US were at the time!

I posted an editorial from the NY Times written by Terry Anderson this morning called "Pearl's Kidnappers Won't Win", here I don't know how to link to an FR article, so I've done the link to the Times, but I don't know if they'll let you access it if you are not 'subscribed'. If you can't link to the Times, do a search on FR. Terry made some great points and the man knows of what he speaks since he spent several YEARS as a hostage in Lebanon!

CNN has been getting all the reports first, because they are the ones receiving the emails. Including the first one with the pictures. CNN will have the first reports. I think he's dead, because money was NEVER a factor in the prior demands.

Of course he KNEW he was at risk in Pakistan. And I am opposed to the U.S. fulfilling any terrorist demands, OF COURSE! But kidnapping is liable for the death penalty in the BIBLE and anyone involved in any way in this needs to receive JUSTICE from the U.S. by way of guns and bombs.

Entirely possible.

I think announcing his murder by email is odd in itself. I've never heard of that before.

Usually the body is dumped along the road where it can be found.

reminds me of the controversy after 9/11 where reporters didnt want to wear flag pins.. they had to remain "objective..." and "unbiased, above all this fray" if you will........ LOOK, i hope the guy gets out alive and well as much as anyone does, but he does have to take a lot of the blame. he was warned by our govt of the risks of going to pakistan.

Of course, now the "real" kidnappers will have to show proof that they have the reporter and that he is still alive.

Heh, heh, heh...

What you don't realize is that CNN broke this story because they are the ones receiving the emails, not the US gov't! All the emails were sent to CNN directly including the ones with the pictures attached. CNN has turned them over to the State Dept.

As much I despise CNN, they are much closer to this story than the other news outlets.
