the third cat might survive a month or two--he has caught plenty of mice and shrews -- but he never eats them--he just throws them around for awhile and then brings them to me for extreme praise and (I think) because he likes to "laugh" at me as I gingerly pick the thing up and dispose of it -ICK

Cats continually show disrespect for humans. It's time for PETH, People for the Ethical Treatment of Humans!
