As they struggle to deal with the incessant developments in the Enron story, President Bush and his advisors undoubtedly are tempted to follow the tried-and-true tactics of the modern political war room: Fight hard to win every news cycle by responding to every new twist and answering every fresh accusation. It is a temptation they must resist.

Instead, the Bush administration should face up to a simple but hard reality: The Enron scandal is going to be nasty, brutish and long.

Me too. The problem was that everyone who was not in on the fun decided to be a bunch of party poopers and complain about it.

"it never paid to engage in a public fight over documents"

Ok, Misters Fabiani and Lehane, it would like to see copies of all emails that you have sent for the past six months. I would like to know who you talked to, what was said, what your private opinions are, what your motives are, what you joke about, whether you have had contacts with Democratic activists, special interest groups, etc. Since you use your influence to sway public opinion on political issues, the public has a right to know who you talk to behind the scenes.
