One of the major newspapers in Canada conducted a poll last year and asked their readers if they wanted to merge with the U.S. The vast majority did not want to, which didn't surprise me.

What DID surprise me is that the provinces most receptive to the idea were the most socialist ones (Quebec and the Maritimes), while Alberta was the one that was most staunchly opposed. Go figure.

Ontario elected Mike Harris

Yes you did.
Harris, IMO is a fiscal conservative.
Getting a fiscal and moral conservative elected PM is another story

The article is fascinating in its entirety.

The bit about the right is on point.
Hoever, Canadian naitonalism is always in trouble. Canada is neither a country based on an idea nor people. It is more multi-culti than America, nbut remained a subsurvient colony.

To a large degree, Canada is screwed because it was never founded as such. The American Revolution ( as much a civil war as a war of independence) split British America inbto the US and the rest. Canada thus is not so much a country but a historical accident.
Therefor, what is there to unify Canada? Its Britishness won't do as it is no longer a colony and besides it has Quebec and is officially multi-cultural.
Thus Canada can only be the un-America, defined by its socialism and anti-Americanism. For British conservatives, this is a problem.

(Sigh) OK let's look at it this way. British Columbia will elect 1 dem 1 repub as senators. Alberta 2 repubs. Manitoba depends on the strength of the candidate and ditto for Saskatchewan and Ontario. Same thing for Presidential elections.

Ontario is Canada's Northeast. The Progressive conservatives are natural Rino's. I really don't want them.

Would you explain the reference to Israel in the context of the rest of this article.

"" Its reflexive pro-Americanism is reflected in recent statements by the two front-runners in the Alliance leadership race. Stockwell Day declared in a February 4 speech, "In the weeks and months to come, Canada must decide where we will stand in this next phase in the war on terrorism. Will we stand with the United States and Israel as allies against the axis of evil, or will we try to be neutral bystanders, groping for some kind of middle ground between good and evil which does not exist?""

Pipe dreams of Canada merging with the United States come about every few years. What real, substantial benefit could there possibly be for both nations to do so? Is there really any serious inclination in either population to do such a thing? Why do I get the distant feeling that some circles desire an 'empire' of sorts on the NA continent?

It means that he is saying that our foriegn policy should stand by our allies the US and Israel and against the axis of evil. Why did I have to explain that?

If the Maritimes become part of this country that will only add more democrat senators and reps to further socialist aims. - Tom

I don't normally associate Israel as an ally in "The War on Terror" in fact if she were actually a part of it The rest of the countries would probably not be.

I didn't mean to put you on the defensive, I was just wondering why one of your politicians would specify Israel as a third party to U.S. Canadian relationship and why he would specify Israel when England would probably be a closer associate of the US in "The War on Terror.

I'm not sure I want 10 million more Socialists.

I know that I don't. We have enough "blue counties" as it is. I admire lots of Canadians, but they are definitely in the minority. Many too many Socialists.

Easy. If Canada joins America, it is a given that England will also join.

Seriously, though the Israelis have been fighting the Islamists for 50 years.

The sages were also fond of asserting that Ronald Reagan could never be elected governor of California.

Then later, they confidently declared he could never be elected president of the United States.

KEEP THE FAITH, Cote!

I think you fail to realize that in 10 years 15 max their will not BE a Canada. Their will be the 51st (British Columbia) 52nd (Alberta) 53rd (Manitoba) 54th (Saskatchewan) and the biggie 55th (Ontario) states with the Northern land as 'territories'.

I don't know your reasoning behind this, but it just ain't gonna happen!

I see no reason to fight it as I loathe Post-Trudeau Canada.

All the more reason to fight! You're allowing the 'socialist-malaise' to overcome you, (and that's exactly what they want!)
Canada will have it's Day!

But they also want complete legalization of drugs - which I can't support.

You must either live in the Maritimes or west of Ontario. I've been to Ontario. They're still pissed that King George lost.

The "civil rights" crowd will never spring for any merger with Canada because it will "dilute" the minority vote. Too many new whites dontcha know.
