Rhonda Shelby and Physcians for Global Irresponsibility
Oregon Magazine ^ | February 27, 2002 | Larry Leonard

Posted on 03/02/2002 8:13:34 PM PST by WaterDragon

The morning weather girl at KATU [Portland, Oregon], with the admiring support of the other intellectual giants on the set, once more demonstrated that there isn't a working brain in Portland television. Using cuts from a famous leftwing special interest group that is known for its artistic interpretation of data, she warned us of the calamitous future awaiting us if we drive the cars we like, live in dwellings larger than a dumpster and, oh, manufacture anything, ever again, anywhere in America. The dreaded greenhouse gasses, you know. (snip)

The world temperature, by the way, has either been going up or going down since the planet formed. We are quite fortunate that it has been going up geologically lately, since when it goes down the planet becomes an ice sheet down to the 45th parallel. (Portland is under hundreds of feet of snow ice. Salem enjoys a climate similar to present-day Siberia.) So, climate change isn't a new condition.

Rhonda says all the human-caused heat is going to melt the ice caps and flood our coastlines. Why, we're minutes away from it! Since Portland is about 65 feet above sea level, I was shocked that she wasn't wearing hip-waders. (Certainly, all of us should when watching KATU News.)

The BBC isn't as sure about the melting as she is. (snip)

The point is that Rhonda Shelby should take a course in journalism, and then come back to KATU and explain what it's all about to the news department. When there is a major dispute concerning an issue -- and the link above proves there is a body of world scientists who think the Man-generated global warming theory is hogwash -- a professional reporter doing a straight news piece mention that fact. There should be a Larry Leonard in every major city in America relentlessly skewering the brainless twits in the mainstream media!

Sounds like she may be a ditzy blonde who knows absolutely NOTHING about supposed global warming-she probably got on TV for her ditzy looks with not much upstairs. Sounds like she is better off sunning her brains on some beach somewhere than trying to feed the public false information.

Hmmmm...Do you recall Gore and Clinton organizing TV weathercritters to push global warming a few years back? Can remember the specifics.

Wasn't there a time when it was considered normal for that ice-covered island east of Canada (the one that on a Mercator projection looks as big as a planet) to be, well, "green"?

I liked especially that bit that we should be wearing hipwaders while listening to these brainless twits. Hipwaders for the rising tide of sh*t coming from these intellectually-challenged, coiffed, simperers.

We've been warming for thousands of years and NOW it's a crisis? Humans are adaptable. We'll just move north, and we'll desalinate ocean water and pump it into the aquafers we are depleting now, all with cold fusion powered by landfill garbage.

Get a grip, news media. The most likely catatrophe isn't the weather; it's that terrorists are going to nuke D.C.

No, the vikings called it "Greenland" even though it was icy, just like they called the other island "Iceland" even though it was nice. They wanted to keep Iceland to themselves, they figured people would be less likely to move there if it had an inhospitable name.

In the immediate future, put me on the global warming wish list. I'm ready to see the end of this snow and ice.

P.S. My cows feel the same way.

Actually, when the Vikings first arrived in Greenland, the climate was indeed mild, and it was very green, which is how it got its name. Within a few years after the Vikings arrived, a little ice age moved back over Greenland, and most of the Vikings had to leave as they weren't able to grow food.

Which is the point of the article: The earth's climate goes through continual changes, and scientists do not as yet have much understanding about what sets off the changes.

scientists do not as yet have much understanding about what sets off the changes.

Mini Ice Ages, like the one that which killed off the communities in Greenland, are generally due to unusual volcanic activity. Long Ice Ages, with their periods of short global warming (such as we are in now) are proably due to precession of the Earth's axis and other long term astronomical cycles.

I'll post a link to an article about that in a minute.

Thanks for the link, patriciaruth. Scientists are working hard, have been for years, trying to understand what causes climate changes. It's like a wonderful journey of discovery, as exciting as the discovery of the New World! But a lot more complicated, for sure!
