As a side note, in the future, when they move on to other units, they will be able to wear their 10th Mountain Division insignia on their right shoulder to indicate which unit they served while in combat.

I second that.

God Bless the troops in harms way for US, let's be worthy of them!

"Why do some have the patch and some don't?"

I'm trying to come up with a good reason why troops from the same unit would have different uniform standards.

Here's my guess. Patches are generally sewn on by seamstresses/seamsters in garrison environments. When in the field, if a uniform gets ruined it's discarded and replaced free of charge by the supply element.

The 10th Mtn has been in the AO from the beginning. My guess is that in that 4-5 month period some of the uniforms have become unserviceable and have been replaced by supply out of new stock. That new stock would not have patches presewn and the troops wouldn't have access to pro sewers, so the requirement for uniformity has been relaxed.

Once upon an enlisted time I was a combat intel guy. I could make a case for these guys NOT wearing patches so that the enemy will not know who is opposing them.

Thank you folks for the info (I'm retired USN and don't know squat about Army Uniform standards). They do look like a great bunch of troops! Here's a prayer for their safety. P.S. This post was also to you KG9 Kid...but couldn't get the posting filter to accept your moniker.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Having been in the military, but never (thank God) having seen action, I like to think I know what they're thinking. However, I don't know squat!!! You're right...they are true heros. I think I'll go & hug my wife.
