This will be a tricky campaign. The good guys have to enlist a third party. Dole must present a positive effort. She can't be an attack dog. Yet, Bowles was so complicit in the filth and corruption of Willie's crime wave that this must be emphasized at every turn.

Bowles wasn't deep in the sewer; he was pretty visible. He left a slime trail and it should be well documented. Someone must link Bowles to the filth at every event and on every point. Chain Bowles to the turd and don't let him even try to move to high ground.

Who can/will go after Bowles the way Carvile/Begala/Davis/Emanuel would go after him were the roles reversed? Yes, as dirty as that.

In everything I say and write, here in Western Carolina, I will hang Billyjeff Cllinton around the neck of Erskine Bowles like the rotting carcass of an albatross. None of Clinton's henchmen ever got and held the job without having his/her ethics surgically removed at birth.

Other states, like New York, may put up with slime like that. The Tarheel State will not.

"On the other hand, I think if you look at what we accomplished in his administration … I think we’ve got a lot to be proud of."

Such as making "oral sex" a topic of discussion by schoolchildren?

I think we all know Ms Dole (or in a long-shot Mr Snyder) will run well in western North Carolina. However as both Mr Vinroot and Mr Faircloth learned, statewide elections are won or lost "down east." The jury remains out on how well Ms Dole will eventually become organized in this critical region.

The early Bowles TV ads have been very effective. Governor Easley using his political muscle to embarrass Ms Dole at the Azalea Festival in Wilmington is not a good sign -- (she has been "uninvited" to speak.)

It is all about the grassroots and meeting the voter "down east." While the Third Congressional District Chairmanship is prepared to transition smoothly to Mr Beales at the convention in Kinston, there is already a fight brewing about the next Chairman for the First District. Hopefully for Ms Doles her folks get hip to what is going on at the local level and possible bumps in the road are smoothed over before the convention in Chocowinity.

Because some party faithful have their own ideas about the type of strong leadership that is needed to take over the reigns in the First District -- I imagine they will get what they want.

This is Ms Dole's election to win, however her out of state organizers should try and acknowledge the steep learning curve her campaign must access -- it's not all about money "down east."

"Who can/will go after Bowles the way Carvile/Begala/Davis/Emanuel would go after him were the roles reversed?"

Jim Parker - the social-conservative candidate running against Liddy Dole in the GOP primary.

Parker has been willing to push things hard so far. He's been the only candidate so far willing to raise the "carpetbagger issue" against Liddy Dole. He's campaigned at gun shows all over the state. He's pushed veterans-benefits issues.

Liddy Dole's recent voter registration - is it illegal?
