WASHINGTON California Rep. Gary Condit has a date with the hot seat: The conquered congressman has been subpoenaed to answer questions about the disappearance of "good friend" Chandra Levy.
A grand jury is probing allegations Condit, 53, obstructed justice by asking ex-girlfriends to deny their affairs with him.
The panel can ask wide-ranging questions about what he knows about the intern.
The Washington Post reported Condit is expected to be called next month a few weeks before the first anniversary of Levy's disappearance. Members of his staff also might be called.
Condit's lawyer, Mark Geragos, refused to discuss the case.
Billy Martin, lawyer for Levy's parents, said he is glad a grand jury would "compel witnesses to provide truthful answers. Maybe now, Chandra's family and the public can learn more about her disappearance," Martin said.
Condit, who lost his bid for reelection March 5, insists he has no idea what happened to her.
Legal experts say police apparently believe Condit has not told the full truth and want him under oath to compare his answers with what he has told police.
The congressman should take the Fifth if called, legal defense experts advise.
"This is a classic perjury trap," said John Zwerling, board member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

"This is a classic perjury trap," said John Zwerling, board member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Only if he doesn't tell the truth.
Why wouldn't he want to tell the truth?

Billy Martin was a great baseball manager, but when did he get a law degree?
Maybe he'll go with the suicide squeeze... Chandra in a trash compactor.
Maybe the hit and run... head shot in the woods.
Billy knew the bar scene and would fight anybody. I'm sure he's figured out Condit.
If the judge isn't Micky Mantle or Casey Stengel, this case will go nowhere.

Gee, wonder what Dickie Gephardt will do if a sitting member of Congress takes the fifth in front of a Federal g.j.?
How 'bout it, Dickie? Gonna stand by your man?

Intersting to find out of Condit will take the fifth. Is he now running as an Independent? Or has he given up his political position. While the person who beat him in the primary appears to be not much better, and possibly is worse, at least this should send a message not to imitate Clinton. Only Clinton will be given a pass for messing with interns.

The National Enquirer is running a four-page cover story with an analysis that parallels mine (though they tiptoe around a bit, saying "the killer" instead of "Condit") -- Levy logged on to Mapquest, went to meet someone at Klingle Mansion deep within Rock Creek Park, was killed (strangled) and buried near there, then the body was moved a few days later to a cavern or the Shenendoah River near Luray, Va.
Only new piece of information - Levy had also visitied websites related to breast surgery that day -- TNE speculates she may have been interested in having them altered for Condit.
There's also a short sidebar on an anonymous area homosexual S&M "teacher" who deined to both TNE and later FBI that he ever knew Condit or Levy.

Wonder if Condit can remember what he told the police, if he lied, it's going to be hard to keep it all straight.

That goes for his aides too. Or maybe one of them will decide taking a chance on a perjury rap isn't worth it for a congerssman who's soon to be unemployed.

Actually, the article mentioned breast reduction and "other" surgeries. She downloaded pictures of a lot of different options, apparently.
