Three years ago I attended a program where four members of the Enola Gay crew were present for interview. Paul Tibbets, the Pilot, Tom Firebee the Bombadier, "Dutch" Van Kirk the Navigator and R.H. Nelson, the Radio Operator. The ineviteble question was asked, "Did you have any regrets?" To a man, and without hesitation all said "None whatsoever". The room erupted into applause.
All this guilt trip stuff is apologist bull$hit. My dad cried when he heard the news. He was set-up to participate in the invasion of Japan. When he heard they dropped the bomb, he cried because he knew he was going to live.

God Bless your Father and all who served with such dignity and distinction. They did the right thing and we are eternally grateful.

Mine too. He's long gone now, but I remember my dad telling me that he was on some ship on his way to invade the Japanese mainland at the time. Marine Corps, Engineering Battalion and, according to him, he would have been amoung the first ashore. Not likely he would have lived.
I was born in '57, so little question I'd have ever been born.
"No such thing as an atheist in a foxhole," he used to say. Unfortunately, at the time, I was too young to truly appreciate all that he risked, and all that he faced.
Rest in peace, Dad. And Semper Fi.

Thanks for sharing the anecdote of your father. Hundreds of thousands must have cried because they knew they would be coming home to their wives and kids. In war, I care about us.
