RAMALLAH, West Bank (Reuters) - Gun battles erupted between Israeli troops and Yasser Arafat's bodyguards around the Palestinian president's West Bank offices Friday, a senior aide to Arafat said.

"There are gun battles between Israeli troops and President Arafat's bodyguards inside the compound. We hold the Israeli government fully responsible and warn it that it is playing with fire," said Nabil Abu Rdainah, Arafat's top aide.

He told Reuters by telephone from inside the complex in the West Bank city of Ramallah, nine miles north of Jerusalem, that several people had been wounded in the fighting.

It broke out after Israeli army bulldozers began demolishing the fence surrounding Arafat's compound following an incursion by dozens of tanks into Ramallah, Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo said.

The incursion, confirmed by the army, followed indications by the Israeli government that it would take tough military action in response to a Palestinian suicide bombing that killed 20 Israelis at a Passover holiday feast Wednesday.

One Fatality in Netzarim Attack

(IsraelNN.com) At least one person has been killed in the early morning terrorist infiltration into the Gaza community of Netzarim. Others were wounded. The exact number and extent of their injuries is unknown at this time. Army forces and border police are searching the community for the terrorist(s) believed to still be in the area.

The attack occurred this morning outside of the community synagogue. One person, a guest visiting for the Passover holiday, was stabbed and critically wounded and transported to the Soroka Medical Center. Additional confirmed details will be published as they become available.
