11:13 PST NABLUS, West Bank (AP) -- Israeli tanks entered the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday, Palestinian witnesses said. The thundering sound of tank shells could be heard in Nablus as Israeli tanks began rolling into the city, the West Bank's largest, launching a new invasion in the six-day offensive to wipe out militant networks.

About 300 to 400 tanks were in position on all sides of the city, and some fired at barricades set up by gunmen.

Gunmen and Palestinian police were moving in the streets in groups throughout the city. The gunmen closed the main roads with sandbags and trash cans filled with sand, and planted home-made mines.

Two long columns of IDF tanks entered the West Bank city of Nablus on Wednesday night, Palestinian witnesses said.

Gunmen and Palestinian police were moving in the streets in groups throughout the city, ahead of the IDF entry. The gunmen closed the main roads with sandbags and trash cans filled with sand, and planted home-made mines.
