People who see themselves as supporters of peace have identified with those they see as the victims, the oppressed Palestinians. The cannot psychologically fit the horrible behavior of Israel's opponents into their image of the Palestinians (and of themselves) and therefore deny what seems plain from our point of view. To see themselves as having been wrong in such a big way is impossible, since they would have to change their self image from noble to foolish, and would have to face the fact that they have been undermining the very peace they think of themselves as seeking.
Given such denial, if Israeli's are killed by Palestinians and other Israelis react in ways that Palestinians feel are humiliating to them, the Israelis are the ones more at fault to the supposedly compassionate observers of the world.
