[history]
DETROIT -- A program to ease overcrowding at the Wayne County Jail has set free tens of thousands of accused felons with little or no supervision -- leading to even more new crimes including murder, rape, carjacking and assault.
The jail, under Wayne Circuit Court orders since 1971 not to exceed its 1,885-bed capacity, has set free more than 60,000 people in the past seven years alone with only their promise to show up for trial. With no bail money to lose or court supervisors looking over their shoulders, nearly half vanished.

The Left wants these people on the street so they can continue to justify their expansion of government control over our lives.

One solution our community took - build a new, larger jail. No such approach was included in the article. Why isn't new construction under way - now?? Build the jail a large as necessary to keep the monsters confined. Just a thought.

This article should be filed under "Blindingly Obvious Except To Liberals".

It took a thousand words to say "DAH"!

Wayne County Prosecutor Michael Duggan is the same a$$hole who was one of the most vocal opponents of Michigan's CCW law, which was enacted last year. It shouldn't be too hard to conclude that when criminals are kept in jail/prison for the entire length of their sentence, the crime rate declines. Didn't the 1990's see the largest increase in the prison population and the largest decrease in crime in U.S. history? Hmmm. That's an interesting correlation.

"Inmates freed early commit new crimes"Yep. And that puts lots more money in the defense lawyers pockets and grows the government because of the need for more courts and judges etc. Don't you get it, it's the economy. This is liberalism at its best.

"For 39 bucks and a car nobody would want," said Jess Livermore, Flesner's brother-in-law. "With the number of drug-related murders, it doesn't make any sense to me to let people involved with drugs out of the jail. They are probably more lethal than others they don't let out." Hey, Governor Pataki! Libertarians!

Pretty good point. Defense lawyers (unless we're talking about public defenders) don't suffer from this. Taxpayers sure do though.

At least 1,085 people freed under the administrative release program in the last three years have been rearrested and charged with committing new crimes, a Detroit News investigation found. Gee, if they kept these creeps in prison, they could build more prison space with the money spent to hire more police. Fewer crooks and less crime would necessitate fewer policemen.
OOOPS....sorry police union.

On the contrary, public defenders get all sorts of tax payer monies to mount the defense. To pay for private detectives, expert witness's, lab tests etc. etc.. The opertunities to pad their accounts are unlimited. Kickbacks at the courthouse are the norm not the exception.

Interesting...and yet you hear about what a lousy job public defenders often do in criminal cases....in a country where there has been a glut of lawyers for quite a while. What a system!

I would be inclined to agree with you if I didn't get the impression that you think the solution boils down to giving more power to one ethnic group and encouraging self-loathing amongst those of another ethnic group.

These people who are freeded early and go on to commit crime(s) need to be executed. Society is better off without them!

Bobby has blond hair. Bobby is a convicted murderer. Therefore everyone with blond hair is a murderer. Glad you pointed that out to us.
