RIYADH, 9 April Special committees have been set up to monitor drug addiction among the personnel of the various wings of the military including the Border Guard.
Lt. Gen. Talal Mohsin Al-Angawi, director general of the Border Guard, disclosed this while addressing a function organized to mark the passing out of the 118th batch of graduates from the Institute of Border Guard here on Sunday.
Al-Angawi urged the Border Guards to be aware of their vulnerability, as they too may be targeted by drug traffickers.
He accepted that a small number of the Border Guard personnel have become entangled in the illegal world of drug abuse. This usually occurred when they were traveling abroad or when they fell into bad company.
The committees in the Ministry of Interior responsible for combating drug addiction among military personnel have been making every effort to fight the evil, including asking the soldiers to do blood tests before they can be promoted.
A senior officer in the Border Guard acknowledged that a number of random tests on all soldiers have revealed the problem of drug addiction in the force. Those found to have taken drugs are summarily dismissed from the service.
