Terrorists, pirates, and murderers a government do not make.

The US should NOT meet with a terrorist and murderer.

In the end, because history repeats itself to those who never learn,
if Powell meets with Arafat endorsing his terrorism, I bet more Israelis and Americans die for
Powell's betrayal of what is right and was known to Jefferson.

Pathetic.

It would be even more pathetic to walk away. As I said, I believe the State Dept. is setting him up for a final fall to discredit him once and for all! If he blows this, as expected, demands for a new leader will be a given and the Arabs will need to come up with one.

Comon people, you guys had to know this would happen. We all knew they would end up haveing the meeting on Sunday. The White House set this up to fail, Bush knows he made a mistake by demanding that Isreal withdrawl from Palistinian areas, so he sent Powell to Isreal to meet with Arafat to get him to renounce the suicide bombings. The White House never expected Arafat to do so, then Bush could bring Powell back home saying that he gave Arafat one last chance. Then Bush could get out of what he said earlier and tell Isreal to go ahead and keep the Tanks rolling. Unfortunately Arafat threw an wrench in all of this and supposedly did the unexpected and renounced the Suicide bombings, so now what do we do?

Anti-Powell opinion is perfectly within bounds. As is pro-Powell opinion. Neither is a measure of patriotism. As I said, cut the crap.

The US should NEVER appease terrorists and pirates.

And who said we were .. A lot of the complaints I keep hearing around here are .. "we gave Arafat a chance .. how many chances should we give him"

The truth is .. a lot of that happened under the Clinton Administration .. not the Bush Administration

Bush has been avoiding Arafat because Bush was not interested in a Photo Op ..

Now Bush is forced to deal with this mess .. hence his meaning of last chance

I think Bush knows .. just like we all know .. Arafat is a liar .. but we have to go thru the motions and give the offer

Besides if Israel really wanted to take Arafat out .. they could in a heart beat .. they are parked right outside his door .. So I am guessing there is a reason they have have not done so .. just like Bush and his Administration has a reason for what they are doing

I think to many people are use to the 8 yrs of Clinton who would leak his plans to the media before it happened

Bush is not like that .. he does not tip his hand to the enemy or anyone else what his plans are .. he keeps them guessing

The problem here is that this terrorist is the head of a recognized government.

Exactly .. we have no choice but to deal with Arafat

There appears to be a growing consensus on both the left and the right that:

1)We must deal with Arafat as the true Palastinian representative if we are to hold together what little moderate Arab support we enjoy. That means that only Arabs are going to be allowed to dispose of Arafat when his usefulness is exhausted.

2)Arafat will never sign a peace accord that places him in a public posture which supports the existance of a Zionist state.

3)Moderate Arab support is essential if we are to remove Saddam from power.

4)The three principals listed above are a paradox that has existed for a score of years and the primary reason why peace for Israel is unachievable unless the west is willing to involve itself in a conflict that appears to be religiously based or these aging Arab leaders pass the mantel of power to a younger, more moderate group.

Powell's (the administration's) great fear is that the present level of violence, if allowed to continue, even if Israel is triumphant, will harden the next generation of Arabs and a meaningful peace will remain unachievable for another score of years.

The Palestinians have asked for Jihad today.

If Powell meets with this Terrorist after the PA request for Jihad today,
then Powell should admit he is a traitor to the US and its allies.

The Fat did what was expected! He did exactly as requested. The plan now is to build on that. One more bombing will screw the pooch! Arabs will have to deal with that and perhaps put pressure on Fat. If they don't, we come home and hit Iraq with everything we got. That is what I would like to see.

Arafat mouths a hollow, insincere condemnation of a suicide homicide,
despite the fact that he has financed and continues to lead the largest terrorist gang in the world,
and Powell is scurrying now to kiss Arafat's tush.
Sickening.

Why is the State Dept. like it is? I know it seems like a stupid question, but it doesn't seem to matter who is in the State Dept., the results and actions and statements are always the same. Why is that?

Life is cheap. A few insincere words from a murderer are enough to reward him with a PR coup of enormous proportions.

Regardless of the force of the message delivered to Arafat by Powell, all that will be seen by the Palestinian population are the pictures of Arafat receiving the kow-tow from the American official. Regardless of the message, the Arafat will be bolstered -- and the Palestinian population will in no way see this as anything but a victory for their leaders, and legitimacy for their war effort, because that is the portrayal it will receive in their media.

Winston Churchill: "You had the choice between war and dishonor, you chose dishonor and you shall get war."
