If a sufficient number of democrats had put principle before personality, Gore would indeed have been running as the incumbent. He would have likely won--who knows?
Not very many democrats have sufficient principle, however. Hence the Bush presidency. What goes around, comes around.
A lesson available to the democrat perty is to get principled; a lesson which will go unlearned, due to their fundamental moral shortcomings, individually and as a group.
