The disclosures suggest that Ms Witt, 36, who posed naked for Playboy in 1998, was one of the East German regime's most willing accomplices. Can that middle clause be any more irrelevant to the article? *g* I guess the author or his editor wanted lots of hits from the dark side of the Internet.

Headline:
Hollywood names Katarina Witt Woman of the Year!
To: Pokey78
Ms Witt,......... has since built an international career as a producer of ice extravaganzas. She was also a television commentator during the last winter games. I see that she is now eating at the table of the capitalist pigs. A reactionary. She has abandoned the struggle and betrayed her komrades. Re-education is called for.
Return her to a communist country immediately, where she may once again become a cadre of the fatherland.

Katarina Witt: a "useful idiot" on skates.......but a really good looking girl.

Wonder if this tWitt has every slept with Bill Clinton?

Witt has been considered to be one of the world's 50 most beautiful women. She knows how to use it to her advantage.

The rewards heaped on Ms Witt included a Soviet-built Lada in blue from the Stasi pool, thus jumping the 10-year waiting list for the cars (she later exchanged it for a red West German Volkswagen Golf); a flat; extensions to her parents' home; a holiday in Bulgaria and a passport enabling to her to travel to West Berlin followed. You can tell how bad things were in East Germany when a trip to communist Bulgaria was considered a treat.

I really don't understand what the big deal is. Katarina is right -- everything she is she is because of the East Germans' dedication to shining international examples that their system worked. Certainly, it worked for Katarina, because she was one of the elite.
What is it that people expect her to say? That she should have suffered under the Soviet dominance? That she would trade all her success and riches for whatever freedom normal Easterners enjoy now? Come on.
So, she's not going to be a commercial for capitalism. Big deal. Shut up and enjoy the show, and what a show she puts on.

She's lucky she was a figure skater and not a speed skater or swimmer. The East German forced women in strength sports to take massive doses of steriods to build up muscle mass.

Hmmm, Did she have a phone in her skate?

If she did not "rat out" anybody or otherwise cause grief, it looks like she mearly parlayed an otherwise completely oppressive situation into one that, to some extent, worked.
I'd be a little slow to condemn.
