The homosexual or "gay rights" movement has essentially borrowed and adopted the protest "style" of the civil rights movement, the anti-Vietnam war movement, and the feminist movement of the 1960s. It is structured as an "activist" and media relations propaganda campaign. The activists actually seem to enjoy shocking middle-class Americans (or Catholics, in this case)with their antics. This "in-your-face" mentality seems to have something to do with the emotional and psychological disorder which goes along with the orientation. Acting out in street demonstrations and speaking to the media at bishops' conferences, for instance, are sort of "therapy" for them in that it makes them think their movement is more socially significant than it actually is (in terms of numbers). If you compare this to the behavior of Islamic militants who take to the streets or blow up buildings and airplanes occasionally, there are some similarities. The issues are peripheral, tertiary, and don't concern most Americans on any kind of regular basis. Before the current sex scandals, for instance, how often did you think about sodomy or gay sex of any kind? Only when some media event brought them into public view probably. This is as much about delusions of "self-importance" as anything else. We can feel sorry for them without accepting any part of their agenda.

It is really an emotional illness, psychotherapy, and hygiene problem of a small minority of the population. This never had to become a "Catholic" problem on page one if bishops and other church leaders had done their job 20 or 30 years ago. Who, for instance, will be representing Catholics suffering from cancer or schizophrenia at the Dallas conference? Sexual disorders should be handled privately by psychiatrists, physicians, and local health departments.

Is This Gay Behavior Sick?

"Let´s look at gay behavior as defined by two gays, Marshall Kirk and Hunter Madsen Ph.D., authors of After the Ball: How America will Conquer its Fear and Hatred of Gays in the 90´s (1989).
In Chapter Six, they outline “ten categories of misbehavior,” drawn from their own experiences, wide reading and thousands of hours of conversation with hundreds of other gays... .
• They say gays suffer from a “narcissistic” personality disorder and they give this clinical description: “pathological self absorption, a need for constant attention and admiration, lack of empathy or concern for others, quickly bored, shallow, interested in fads, seductive, overemphasis on appearance, superficially charming, promiscuous, exploitative, preoccupied with remaining youthful, relationships alternate between over idealization and devaluation.”..."

I agree that homosexual attraction is a sexual disorder; however, unlike the many Catholic hospitals that care for cancer and schizophrenia, the only Catholic organization that seems to care for those with same-sex attraction is Courage. Perhaps even more important, there are no media or secular activists encouraging Catholics to contract cancer or schizophrenia as normal expressions of human physical or mental health as there are media and secular activists encouraging Catholics to act on their homosexual attractions as normal expressions of human sexuality.
