State and federal authorities early Wednesday evening executing arrest and search warrants at the Middle Georgia compound of the United Nation of Nuwaubian Moors, arresting two people on charges of transporting minors across state lines to have sex.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Putnam County sheriff's department arrested Dwight York and Kathy Johnson, who are charged with transporting minors from Sullivan County, New York, to Putnam County to have sex, according to the Associated Press.
York, also known as Malachi York, faces an additional three counts of going from Putnam County to Orlando, Florida, to have sex with a minor and transporting minors across state lines to have sex.
Authorities moved into the compound, near Eatonton, about 3 p.m. and had blocked off roads to the area. Ga. 142 was blocked off in both directions.
Law enforcement sources said York was taken into custody outside the compound a short time earlier. York served time in New York in the 1960s for assault, resisting arrest and possession of a dangerous weapon.
York has claimed to be from another galaxy and has said that in 2003 spaceships are going to descend from the sky and pick up a chosen 144,000 people for a rebirth.
Local resident Dennis Stevenson came to the site to check on his father-in-law and mother-in-law who live in Eatonton.
"When you see a policeman on a motorcycle in Putnam County you know something is up. They've blown this way out of proportion. These people have a right to do whatever they want to do as long as they don't bother anybody."
Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills was expected to hold a press conference about 7 p.m. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Macon also has called a press conference for 7:30 p.m.
The group moved to Georgia in 1993 from New York, where it had allegedly operated under other names, including the Ansaru Allah Community. A 1993 FBI report alleged that the group had connections to a variety of crimes, including arson and extortion.
Dwight York
Libertarianism thrives even in the remotest hinterland.
Ping for thought...
And yes, Putnam co. is the hinterlands.
Do you think it needs to be deleted??
Thanks.
Sex with minors? Are you sure this isn't a California group? Perhaps associated with the Catholic church?
Is that a bad thing?
"The "Master Teacher" and his followers left a tough Brooklyn neighborhood in New York five years ago for 400-plus acres of Putnam County cow pasture and piney woods.
I believe he hails from NYC...
Where have we heard this before? (I'm so sick of the "saving the children" whine and excuses.)
Maybe the authorities could let it slide for another year. Some problems just go away if you ignore them, and this one sounds like a prime candidate.
(Odd, though, that the article makes no mention of the ages of the minors concerned -- are we talking 8-year-olds or 16-year-olds here? It makes a big difference when deciding whether to let it slide until the non-appearance of the spaceship.)
(with apologies to Lloyd Bentsen)
"madprof98, I've served with Libertarians. I've known Libertarians. Libertarians have been friends of mine. madprof98, Dwight York is no Libertarian."
Dwight York - Slick talking Black Moose Limb using his "religion" as a cover for various criminal activities. Probably not involved with Radical Moose Limbs from the Middle East, as they would be scared of this bunch of fruitcakes. They had a camera at the "compound" on the local 6PM news. This guy's got a giant Sphinx-thing with a black face that was hilarious looking. I suppose that's where the best seats are located for their flight into heaven for the 144,000 Chosen Ones.
"My main concern is the divisions they've caused in the community, black and white,"said Adams-Prevost, who is black. "Because they can't get what they want, it's racial."
