Statement of Speaker Hastert Regarding Partisan Questioning of President
Notice of Press Release via e-mail ^ | May 16, 2002 | Speaker's Press Office

Statement of Speaker Denny Hastert
Regarding Partisan Questioning of the President's Conduct of the War

"I am concerned that some Democrats may have decided to pursue partisanship when it comes to the events surrounding September 11th.

"It is common knowledge that the government of the United States was put on higher alert during the summer of 2001, in response to non-specific threats from terrorists. The federal government took all appropriate steps to respond to that threat.

"Democrats now say that they were kept in the dark about these threats. That is not the case. These threats were relayed on a bipartisan basis to the House Intelligence Committee in real time. In fact, Senator Diane Feinstein said on July 1, 2001 on the Wolf Blitzer show that she had been told that a major attack on the United States could be expected in the next three months.

"Democrats are now calling for an investigation, but they know full well that a bipartisan and bicameral investigation by the House and Senate Intelligence Committees has been ongoing for more than three months. They also know that the Administration has cooperated fully with this important congressional investigation.

"September 11th was a national and personal tragedy. We need to focus our energies in finding and punishing those who are responsible, while making the American homeland more secure. We don't need to be distracted by attempts to make this a partisan issue."

I'm on the press release mailing list and received this today. I did a search under this topic for "Speaker Hastert" and did not find anything. I'm posting this hoping I didn't mess up the search and double-post.

If you go to the web site, http://www.speaker.gov, you'll see a picture of the Speaker and Mrs.Reagan. He presented a Congressional Gold Medal to Ronald and Nancy Reagan yesterday. It's good to see the them honored and remembered.

Now if only the media would report this -- especially since everything President Reagan warned us about came to pass because of Bill Clinton.and the dems.
Hey, I have a rich fantasy life. Let me enjoy it.

It's a start-but, they have to go on offensive and drag out all the Clinton era warnings on the Sunday talk shows. They need to be passionate and outraged, not wish washy gentlemen.

they have to go on offensive and drag out all the Clinton era warnings on the Sunday talk shows

That would work on Fox, but can you see Tim Russert, Cokie Roberts, or George Stephanopolis allowing that to happen on their shows?

The problem here is that Republicans are not as scripted as dems. Trying to feed a Republican talking points -- and expecting him to repeat that and only that -- is a real tough sell. They have a tendency to credit the public with more intelligence than the public actually has -- witness the House Managers trying to explain impeachment (it's not about sex, it's about treason). These guys can tick off point-by-point why Clinton should have been in jail, the the public (and the talk show hosts) get that MEGO (My Eyes Glaze Over) look and all they hear is Carville shreiking, "Theys attakin' maaaah prezadint!"

Republican Congressional staffers live with the constant frustration of having to defend their bosses every time the Congressman tells the truth about the dems. They're constantly fending off attacks and charges of Bigotry! Racism! and Homophobia! That leaves them little time for the actual business of legislating. Eight years of Clinton and the mediawhores have taught them they get a lot more done if they just let the dems shoot themselves in the foot.

That's where we come in. It's our job to get these stories out. The dems can't attack all of us, not all at once. And the media is slowly losing its grip. We're the ones who need to keep the drumbeat going. The dems look stupid when they're caught in their lies, but we're the ones who have to catch them and howl loud and long about it. For Republican Congressmen to try to rein in the moderates and fight the media is asking them to be superhuman. They fight when they can, but they need our support.
