SEATTLE -- Police and firefighters responded to a hazardous material scare at Safeco Field after a low-flying airplane dropped a box of powder on the Seattle ballpark.

Police spokesman Duane Fish says the powder was determined to be the cremated remains of a person who had requested that the ashes be scattered there.

Fire Lieutenant Harold Webb says a box carrying the ashes hit the roof of Safeco Field shortly after ten o'clock. He says the haz-mat crew wasn't sure about the powder until they heard through the F-A-A what the pilot was doing. The incident was over in about an hour. An F-A-A spokesman, Allen Kenitzer, says the agency is investigating, and the pilot could be in trouble. He says ashes have been dropped from planes before, but usually not over a populated area.

Wow!!! Scattering ashes means distributing them over a large area, not throwing the urn out the window!!

Get this pilot a new gig.

Good thing for the pilot that this guy was cremated prior to being placed in the box.

The local news said the container was accidently dropped during what was supposed to be a scattering over the field. The urn falling was a goof, not the plan.

it's not so bad, you would never notice, it would dissapate pretty fast. This isn't the worst thing that comes out of airplanes... ever wonder where airliner toilets flush "to" when you push the button? Wear a hat.

I absolutely agree.

I find this way of dealing with human remains to be obnoxious and selfish.

I'm amazed that it is legal--or is it?

Of course it is legal. and done every day. My uncle, a former B-24 pilot, had his ashes strewn by one of the last B-24's still flying. Another relative is now part of the sands on the beach at our family beach house.

Many people have their ashes scattered over places they loved in life, and I fail to see the selfishness or harm in it.

This was a goof, and the container was dropped accidently.

Just as people doing the scattering get some symbolic satisfaction from the scattering, I get a symbolic disatisfaction from someone's ashes landing in my coffee, on my clothes, or in my nostrils.

Dropping it on people is pretty rude, alright, and shouldn't be done - but I don't have a problem with it provided they have the permission of the owner of the property over which they are planning to scatter the ashes...

It has gone on all this time without you even knowing about it. Most of the time, favorite spots are favorite wilderness lakes and mountains, but this one isn't that hard to predict either.

You have more chance of having a bird drop something in your coffee. Don't worry.

Re: toilets in passenger jets. . .

Actually, in anything 1960 or later, it flushes to a tank.

Prior to that, it vented overboard, and generally flash-froze and the liquids evaporated. Solids froze and fell. IN fact, prior to the development of the Nuclear-Tipped Missile, this practice in passenger aircraft made it possible for you to be hit by an. . . .

Wait for it. . . .

Grinning, ducking for cover, and running like all get-out. . . .

Awww... well that just takes the sport right out of it! I was having more fun thinking of the old way.

[Thunk] What the heck was that?
