14-kg boulder killed bus driver
By RACHEL EVANS, SUN MEDIA
EDMONTON, CA -- Police have identified the 75-year-old bus driver killed early Saturday after a 14-kg rock [30.8 pounds] was thrown from an overpass onto his vehicle. Autopsy results yesterday showed Edmonton family man Robert Arthur Stanley died of blunt force trauma to the abdomen after the windshield of his school bus imploded on Whitemud Dr. about 12:30 a.m.
"We believe the object that was dropped from the pedestrian bridge struck Mr. Stanley in the abdomen area and he died as a result of that injury," said homicide Det. Ernie Schreiber. "The item was a rock about the size of a basketball. We believe it was taken from a yard in the area. We believe we have the location from which it was taken."
The detective said a witness came forward to say they were following the bus and watched it brake sharply to a controlled stop as it pulled over toward the centre median. The witness didn't see anything fall from the pedestrian footbridge over Whitemud Dr., near 113 St.
Stanley managed to pull over and park the Golden Arrow school bus, leaving his hazard lights flashing.
"He demonstrated a tremendous amount of skill," Schreiber said, adding other debris was found on the road, but he couldn't confirm the debris came from other rocks dropped from the bridge.
The bus, which was on its way back to the garage, was spotted by a police officer about 2:30 a.m. But the cop didn't see the broken windshield, and first dropped off an arrest before returning to the scene about 15 minutes later.
He found Stanley on the floor of the bus and performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived. Stanley was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Sudan -- 4 killed sleeping on tracks
www.zawya.com --- Wed June 05 2002 00 10 ~~ KHARTOUM, Sudan, Jun 04, 2002 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) -- Four Sudanese conscripts sleeping on the rail tracks were killed Tuesday when a train ran over them, a military spokesman said. Two others were slightly injured. The accident took place in Abu Eshar in central Gezira region, spokesman Ibrahim Shaqlawy said in a statement. The soldiers were on an overnight mission of guarding their training camp, located near the railroad. They apparently didn't hear the train coming because of strong winds, Shaqlawy said.
The two wounded soldiers managed to jump away at the last minute, he said. A railway official said the train driver tried to alert the sleeping soldiers. The train, carrying oil products, was on its way from the southwestern town of el-Obeid to the capital, Khartoum.
