Country singer Toby Keith has some choice words for Peter Jennings.

Toby Keith says the producer of an ABC 4th of July TV special rescinded an offer to have the country singer perform his current hit after the show's host, World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings, heard the song and vetoed it.

Alan Jackson: Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Out in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Rising against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones
And pray for the ones who don't know?
Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble
And sob for the ones left below?
Did you burst out in pride for the red, white and blue
And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?
Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself and what really matters?

Chorus:
I'm just a singer of simple songs
I'm not a real political man
I watch CNN but I'm not sure I could
Tell you the difference in Iraq and Iran
But I know Jesus and I talk to God
And I remember this from when I was young
Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us
And the greatest is love

Verse:
Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Teaching a class full of innocent children
Or driving down some cold interstate?
Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor
In a crowded room did you feel alone?
Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?
Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened
And you close your eyes and not go to sleep?
Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages
Or speak to some stranger on the street?
Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow
Go out and buy you a gun?
Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers
Stand in line and give your own blood?
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love?

Repeat Chorus

Someone should start a list comparing the musical reactions to 9-11 by country musicians and rock and rollers.

Well let’s see, right off the top of my head:
For Country, you have:

Toby Keith – “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)”
Toby Keith – “My List”
Alan Jackson – “Where Were You”
Len Doolin – “There Ain’t No Yellow In The Red, White and Blue”
Arron Tippin – “Where the Stars and Stripes and The Eagle Flies”
Randy Travis – “America Will Always Stand”
Charlie Daniels Band – “This Ain’t No Rag”
And of course,
Ray Stevens – “Osama – Yo’ Mama” (You in a heap o’ trouble boy)

And for Rock and Roll, you have:

.

.

.

.

.

Oh all right - Neil Young - "Let's Roll"
Although, Neil Young is more Country than Rocker!
:~D

Two songs that were out before 9-11 that have a deeper meaning (at least to me) now are..
One More Day - Diamond Rio
Only In America - Brooks and Dunn

The Doors were told immediately after the deal on Ed Sullivan that they were to have been booked for 6 more shows. Some perfomers consider this when they hold their tongues. MTV has gotten into the business of promoting personalities and not music; you have to play nice to keep getting airtime.

Meanwhile, Jim Morrison wasn't fazed. He'd already played Sullivan's show. And he didn't do it with the snide "in your face" defiance shown in Oliver Stone's film, he just sang the song as written. The surviving members of the band really don't like that movie.

I agree.
And I guess if I'm gonna have Arron Tippin's “Where the Stars and Stripes and The Eagle Flies” on the list I should add these also.

Any objections out there? No?
OK Consider it done.

Many thanks for giving us the words to his song!! I don't listen to country music anymore because conservative talk radio has me hooked. But I am so glad to be able to read that the country folks are still standing up for the USA!! Like Lee Greenwood's "Proud To Be An American"!!

In a tribute to his Dad, Toby Keith said, "...He taught me so many things like...how to work harder than the next guy, with honesty and integrity, never compromise things you believe in and always stay grounded..."

Toby Keith is a Proud American with principles--a concept that makes Peter Jennings uncomfortable.

God Bless the U.S.A.- Lee Greenwood

and what my 8 year old twin daughters lack in musical ability, they make up for with pure volume and feeling. :)

Yeah, but he appears on TV commercials for 1-800-something or other with Alf, so he's probably a homosexual.

Toby has not seen anything yet. Just wait til Jennings does 24 straight hours on 9-11-02. That is just going to be one big freakin nightmare.

I'm sure it offends Peter's keen sensibilities. I'm sure that there are tens of thousands like me who'd like a chance to offend more than his sensibilities. He's a piece of sh*t.
