I'm looking forward to the 5.1 Dolby soundtrack mix. Burns personally oversaw the transfer so it should be stunning!

Originally I thought Ken Burns' Civil War was just OK. The more I watch it and consider it, I believe it's nothing more than a bunch of revisionist history played out in a pleasing format.

According to Burns and his "historians," the Civil War was all about slavery, and offers apology after apology.

I won't subsidize it further by purchasing the DVDs.

YMMV.

I've seen Burns on a few talking head shows and he's a big Bush supporter. He is race obsessed, however (see his "Baseball" or "Jazz)

How is it possible to tell the history of either without race being a very big issue in both ? You think Jackie Robinson playing for the Dodgers wasn't a very, very big issue at the time ? You don't think that in both sports and entertainment 'crossover' isn't a decisive event ?

And as for moving things to DVD, during the 80's PBS had a superb series on the history of the English language. It had episodes on Old-English to Chaucer, Tudor/Stuart English, Scottish English (Scotch-Irish to hillbilly to Texas twang), Irish English, Black English, Cockney, etc. This isn't even available on VHS.

Sorry, please don't get me wrong. I am a huge fan of those series and I know that you obviously can't tell the history of baseball/jazz without getting emersed in race.

However, it all got very heavy handed in the final episode of "Jazz". Did you see it?

That was excellent. I have the companion book, "The Story of English". A good read.

Then that would be quite a change. Ken Burns gave money to the Clintons back in 2000 and was a Gore supporter, as well.

Maybe he was turned from the Dowd Side of the Force?

Be Seeing You,

Chris
