"I'd be willing to bet that if a muslim group wanted to display their star and crescent pagan moon-god symbol, or if Jews wanted to put up a Star of David, there wouldn't be a peep out of them."

yes, you most certainly would. Although the guy that owned the buildings was Jewish, he didn't have Stars of David anywhere in them. Why don't we take this a step further, for all the Catholic folks who died, and put up a thorny-crowned, bloody Jesus up on that cross? Or is that taking it too far?

someone stated the majority of the US is christian so therefore its ok...Puh-leeze, if we all did what the "majority" of Americans did (and please save us: if what the "majority" of New Yorkers did), we'd have a certain Mr. Gore in the white house right now. Ugh, be careful what you wish for.

They are not athesists, they are anti-Christian in discuise.

A thought experiment for atheists:

You can choose either door number one or door number two. The following clues are given to assist you:

Behind door number 1 is either God, heaven and eternal happiness or nothing.

Behind door number 2 is either the Devil, hell and eternal suffering or nothing.

Now which one would the wise person choose and why?

JOHNSON: Right, right. It angers a lot of other people. And it causes a lot of anguish to a lot of non-believers. And 14 percent of the American population are non-believers.

This non-believer likes the cross just fine. These people are analogous to the fundies that burn Mighty Mouse records.

The problem is there are more than two doors. Many more.

So there are only 2 doors? Do Christians, Jews, Hindus, and Muslims all share that one door? They all believe in God, but are hardly the same thing.

Pascal's Wager has gaping holes in it.

You have to understand that they have a far different definition of "Tolerance" than what a standard dictionary explains. To them, it means "Approval" and "Condone" which isn't what tolerance means.

All crosses were removed from all the chapels on every military base in the US and overseas because of muddled thinking like the controversy at WTC site. KoleKole Pass, at Oahu, Hawaii had for many years a metal cross. American Atheists eventually succeeded in bringing that down. The official reason given was due to 'funding cuts' but I'm not buying it.

If Ellen Johnson was at the WTC sifting through the rubble for boby parts day after day for 8 months then maybe she can object to a cross being a part of the memorial. Otherwise let the memorial happen.

Religion should be removed from any official government memorial for Sept. 11 of any other government location. The morality of one religion will always be at odds with another, and in today's shrinking world (and global ties) it is important that everyone start to view things from a more open-minded point-of-view. Religions can helpful to people on a personal level, yet on a governmental level, it can be a dangerous class antagonism.

The truly wise will walk away from the crazy doors with mystical phantasms hidden behind them. After all what mortal could possibly comprehend the whims of mystical phantasms? Far better to stay in the material [real] world.

More than that, government tends to have a heavy hand at whatever it does. When you consider the wonderful things government has done for, say, business, why would anyone in their right mind want government mixed up in religion?

Your more right than wrong when you characterize atheists. As an atheist myself, most of them are nothing more than unstructured whim whorshipers. They worship trees, dolphins, sand dollars, whatever. And most of them are are hard left as they get. So, I rarely find any kind of kinship with them. I probably find them as disguisting as you. Sounds like ol George will make better bug food as a corpse than any type of a decent neighbor.

THAT being said, there is a small subset of atheists that respect the rights of believers, aren't lefties and aren't whack-jobs.

Actually, it shouldn't have any overarching religous theme of any denomination. It shouldn't be religous free, but think of other memorials... From the Gettysburg Address to the Arizona Memorial, there are no lit-up towering crosses or whatnot.

Come on guys, a bunch of working stiffs and go-getters of all stripes checked out one horrible Tuesday morning. The loss won't be forgotten, but it ain't no occation for a revival.

You can choose either door

Your assumption that there are only two doors (or any doors for that matter) is a conclusion not in evidence.

For instance, what if Athena is the true god and she is jealous of your chosing some other god. You could be in real trouble!

Most people in the US are Christian. They voted for Clinton twice. Draw your own conclusions. ha ha
