WASHINGTON The mother of Zacarias Moussaoui, accused in the Sept. 11 attacks, says her son only turned bitter against the United States after being jailed last summer.
"For me, he's not a killer, because he promised me that he didn't do anything," Aicha el-Wafi told CNN's "Larry King Live."
As a youngster, Moussaoui "loved American movies and he was always dressed with American-style clothes," she said.
Moussaoui, a French citizen of Moroccan descent, was arrested Aug. 16 in Minnesota after officials at a flight school became suspicious of his conduct as a student.

Oh, well, the mother says he's okay. Release him, already! That's proof enough!

This is not an unusual story. Petra Kelly, the now-deceased, fanatical, America-hating, Green Party leader in Germany, was an exchange student in the U.S. when she was in HS. By all accounts, she loved America and cried when it was time for her to go home again to Germany. But then she got leftist-religion, and the former love turned to hate.
Many third-world dictators and terrorists were educated in the West, and many loved their experiences there when they were students. It is not the least surprising that Moussaoui was America-crazy when he was young.
Some political conversion process sets in that turns youthful affection and admiration into hate and rage with these folks. Don't know what it is, but it happens a lot.
Western nations believe they are training future friends when they let exchange students in, but it doesn't always turn out that way by any means.

Is that the info you had also?

It is society's fault for putting him in jail. If not for that, he would have been a model citizen. I understand perfectly.

Some political conversion process sets in that turns youthful affection and admiration into hate and rage with these folks. Don't know what it is, but it happens a lot. They love living in America. We have entire aisles in the grocery story devoted to toothpaste. And then they get back home and there are only one or two brands.
They loved driving all over the place in our big cars and then they get back home and have to drive a little three cylinder with $5.00 a gallon gas if they have a car at all.
Resentment quickly follows. Why should we have it when they dont? They want everything that we have but without the building process and tradeoffs that we made to get here.

Of course - they all love the US. As a big, fat, dumb target.

Whole aisles devoted to toothpaste. When my husband got out of Castro's Cuba - he has now lived in the United States more years than he lived in Cuba - he told me that when he first visited an American supermarket he was astounded to realize a large, long aisle was devoted, on one side, to dog food. The other side of the aisle was devoted to cat food. A couple of years ago Price Chopper built a large supermarket right near us and he delights in shopping there for our three cats. They offer not only a large variety of cat food, but toys for cats, beds for cats, flea remedies, etc. As my husband often says "America - the greatest country the world has ever seen - let's hope it stays that way". I once asked him if Cuba became a true democracy if he would want to return. He said "Are you out of your mind? - I'm an American".
