WASHINGTON -- Some members of the California congressional delegation who have received political contributions from WorldCom Inc. officers and the firm's political action committee said Wednesday that they will return the money because of revelations that the company hid $3.8 billion in expenses over five quarters in order to look profitable.

The dems tried to smear the other side when Enron hit the fan. Sometimes those tactics can backfire. The funny thing is that, unless a politician is asked to do something as a quid-pro-quo for a donation, there really is nothing blameworthy going on. If a guy drops a hundred bucks into the church collection plate, is the priest supposed to do a Dun and Bradstreet on the guy to see if the money was obtained in a drug deal or via prostitution? A few thousand bucks from Enron or Worldcom to a politician raising millions is a drop in the bucket. Now, the Buddhist Temple and the Lincoln Bedroom--that's a scandal!
