This is just my own theory, but I believe that it was not really a grizzly attack, but yet another attempt by a Forest Service extremist to keep people out of the woods.
Unlike the arsonists, perhaps this person just couldn't cross that line and burn the forest like his fellow environmental whacko Forest Service personnel did. What to do then? I know, he just rented a bear costume and planned to scare the hell out of anyone entering the woods.
It's just a theory, of course.
Carrying your theory a step further, consider how it might go if Ranger Rick found the bear suit had already been rented out at the costume shop. He might have to settle for a substitute....
Sorry Rick, the bear suit is already taken. You should have let us know sooner and put down a deposit. But we've got a new one in that REALLY ought to scare the campers away from the drug airdrop sites....

That'll work. Maybe. IF you are both VERY cool-headed and lucky,it MIGHT work. Let's not forget that it is just a handgun, and it's not unusual for a grizzly to take multiple hits from even a 375 H&H Magnum, and STILL kill the shooter before they check out.
Better? Happy now?
[I don't really care for bears that much. I had one ate a pal of mine.]

"This is just my own theory, but I believe that it was not really a grizzly attack..." Your theory seems at least partly right. - Grizzly bears usually do far more damage than that. - Cindy Duesel-Bacon, a Stanford University biologist, lost both arms and part of her intestines, and would have been killed except that the bear was run off by the helicopter that had just dropped her in the woods.
Once a Grizzly gets started, it usually finishes the job.

This is rumored (can't be confirmed at this time) to be a photo of the perp. If anyone sees him, make sure to report him to the Forest Service, where I'm SURE they will do their best to bring him to justice. Word has it he's armed with a Bic lighter, so be careful out there.
I feel better knowing the Forest Service is on the case.
Yyyyyyeah.

When the head on the beast is bigger than the grill on your truck, the pistol doesn't look big enough. A shotgun with magnum slugs doesn't look big enough. An elephant gun doesn't look big enough. Just whack it across the nose with a stick. That ought to do it.

Have you ever been to Glacier? There are grizzlies all over. I'm sure this really happened. The bear was more scared than they were.
To: DainBramage
That is a REALLY good picture, especially since they are "endangered", heheh.
The woods are getting scary!
Owls and lynx and bear, OH MY!
To: Squantos
Yeah the bears are a problem alright, but as you say, all you have to do is shoot your partner in the leg, and take off.
But it's these darned mice overrunning the place that are the real problem, not the bears, These suckers are quick!

Fair enough - I didn't tell them I had a full auto Mac 10 with me either.) What's that pea shooter going to do? You need a .44 Mag. Maybe you can get by with a 6 inch .357.
To: Rodney King
You need a .44 Mag. . . 10-4 on the .44 at a minimum. I can't imagine any hiker going into bear country without a .44 within easy reach AND understanding exactly what they'll be up against. These hikers were extremely lucky IMHO.

Thanks for your reports from bear country. Since I left the bush 23 years ago, I no longer get to enjoy fresh bear encounters and yarns each year. ;^)

Check and Mate to you sir ! As a native Texan I am obligated to be prepaired.........
My .460 Weatherby Magnum in a Ruger Number 1 is leaning in the corner for just such mice that may need "killin".........
