DAYTONA BEACH -- A burst of lightning Thursday afternoon jolted several race fans at Daytona International Speedway.

Speedway officials said eight people were treated for minor injuries suffered when lightning struck the vendor display area outside the Speedway grandstands around 3:45 p.m. Six people were treated at care centers at the Speedway and two were transported to Halifax Medical Center. All were released by 5 p.m., Speedway officials said.

Treated and released from the Speedway care centers were fans Dwayne Decoux, 26, of Simpsonville, S.C., and his brother, Derek Decoux, 25, of Pace; Alfred and Mary Greene, 47 and 46 respectively, of Sanford; Richard Santora, 37, of Deltona; and DIS employee Walter Williams, 58, Ormond Beach.

Brian Decoux and his wife Tina ages unavailable, of Pensacola, were treated and released from Halifax. Brian Decoux is a brother of Dwyane and Derek Decoux.

NASCAR officials stopped Winston Cup practice for Saturday's Pepsi 400 at about 3:35 p.m. as a storm front moved through Daytona Beach, bringing torrential rain and heavy lightning.

Speedway Director of Communications Glyn Johnston said public address announcements were made to race fans when the threatening weather moved in, and the grandstands were ordered cleared.

It had to be a Nubian!

Nubia (n¡´bê-e, ny¡´-)
A desert region and ancient kingdom in the Nile River valley of southern Egypt and northern Sudan. After the 20th century B.C. it was controlled by the rulers of Egypt, although in the 8th and 7th centuries an independent kingdom arose that conquered Eygpt and ruled as the XXV Dynasty (712-663). Converted to Christianity in the 6th century A.D., Nubia united with Ethiopia but fell to the Moslems in the 14th century. Much of the region was flooded by the completion of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960's.

Thanks...btw...do you have any idea why they cancelled the time trials last night? I thought it was because of the rain, but they were out there doing practice laps at around 8:00pm or so. Was there a conflict with the time it would take to finish time trials and the other race that was scheduled?

Deej :-)

I think that was the reason. I know the other race started on time. Hard to sleep when you have the roar of cars bouncing off the walls!

Yeah, I imagine so, LOL! Just wait until tomorrow night! With all the fireworks going on (that's one of my favorite parts) plus the roar of the engines, you'll be up all night. ;-)

BTW..do you have any idea what the weather forecast is for tomorrow night? Here's to hoping that the rain will come in the afternoon and be gone by race time. :-)
