Yestaurday, in Israel Channel 1's main new edition there was a report about a military block in the outskirts of East Jerusalem. Part of the report was an interview with about 8 young Israeli-Palestinians (aged 3 to 7, at most) who were wondering around that area. The journalist was an Israeli speaking Arabic. He approached one of those small children (aged around 5-6). It needs to be said that those children are all residents of East Jerusalem (occupyied in 1967) and are Israeli citizens (with full rights).
The following is the exact translation of this short interview:
Journalist: What do you think of the military block here?
Kid: I don't know about this.
Journalist: Why do they put these military blocks?
Kid: Because of the suicide attacks!
Journalist: Then why do people do such suicide attacks?
Kid: They are all martyrs.
Journalist: But what do they achieve by doing that?
Kid: To explode! (smiles with satisfaction)
Jounalist: I see. But what is the benefit of causing such explosions?
Kid: To liberate our homeland Palestine, this is my dream too!
Journalist: But it kills innocent people just like you, is that alright?
Kid: It's alright, they are Jews.
Journalist: So if they're Jews it's alright to kill them?
Kid: Yes! I hate all Jews!!
Journalist: And what about me? I'm also Jewish, do you hate me too?
Kid: You are a journalist, it doesn't count.
(end of interview)
It doesn't ring true to me.
Six year-olds don't know what "journalists" are.
