The PC crowd would rather dumb down the curriculum for the 'slower' kids?

Yup. Here in Montgomery Kounty,MD, there was a math curriculum audit a few years ago. At the end of the audit, the county was basically told if you don't lower the bar, you're racist. Pretty amazing and very sad. The soft bigotry of low expectations.
(And of coarse, the Kounty's first response was "OK! Where do we start?!?" but the parents went ballistic and it never came about.)

I think that Kurt Vonnegut's story "Harrison Bergeron" will eventually be a reality. The gifted will be forced to wear devices that make them less so in order to make everyone equal. Sounds like something libs would really go for.

I applaud these parents. They have chosen to fight the educational drift to mediocrity. I was shocked once to read in a local paper that a teacher was complaining about gifted classes because they made the educational gap between gifted/nongifted wider. We need to educate each student to achieve his maximum potential, not try to make them all equal.

The "top" three administrators of this school QUIT over the implementation of "Honors Classes" WOW!

Just think of what we could accomplish if we implemented Honors Programs across the entire country, and ADD merit pay for good teachers, fired the clymers and threw in vouchers for the big city getto kids.

This combined effort would surely lead to thousands of leftist moronic teachers and administrators leaping from tall buildings....

Oh, the horror of it all....

LOL!! You're serious??? Actually, there was a chance that you could have been Asian, also. The scholls don't care about helping white and Asian students succeed. They're trying to close the gap between black (and hispanic) and white (and Asian) students. If you do well, that only makes their job harder. They would much rather save that place in the A.P. class for a so-called "underprivileged" student. Not you. Get it?

You forgot:

6. Kid stops taking Ritalin at 18, wakes up from stupor as an emotionally-stunted adult, grabs gun and kills first kid who disses him because he never learned to handle setback as an adolescent.

as long as they are open to anyone and not restricted by pre-set qualifications.

as long as they're open to anyone, including those who don't qualify... so that they can hold back those who do qualify. Yeah, great idea!

As long as we're applying that principle to the teaching profession, I don't see why we shouldn't apply it to students as well.

While we're at it, why don't we apply it to the space program, or to the fire department, or to any other field? What the hell? Why should anyone qualify for anything?

Yeah, it'll lead to segragation all right: the smart from the dumb. Sounds good to me!!

Agree. Plus not all students are suited for advanced classes or for that matter higher learning. The world needs laborers too. There is nothing wrong in that either. Labor of any kind is needed and rewarding. Everyone does not need a "degree". There is happiness to be found in other pursuits.

Simple solution: admit them to the honors class after they submit their appropriate race and ethnic data!

pre-set qualifications

I'm sorry, I should clarify. It's not that the teaching profession doesn't require "pre-set qualifications" before one is allowed to teach. It's just that meeting those pre-set qualifications doesn't necessarily qualify one to teach.

Meanwhile, next time I go on a plane trip, I will insist that I be de-segregated from the passengers' group and be included in the pilots' group. Why shouldn't I get to fly the plane? It's not my fault I never got included in flight school?

I don't know about anyone else but by the time I was in high school I didn't need Daddy or Momma to push me to take classes or find out what was out there. By that time, they trusted me to make my own decisions and I think all children should be there by the time they enter high school.

They worry students from Spanish-speaking households -- 65 percent of Gilroy High's 2,300 students -- won't enroll in honors classes even if they can do the work because their parents aren't aware the classes exist and won't push their children to take them.

What the hell!!! So because they think Mexican parents aren't involved in helping their children learn, that all other children should be held back also. THIS IS WHAT DIVERISTY IS. Rather than having everyone striving for excellence, its about forcing everyone to the lowest common denominator. WHy give some students a chance to excel, it might hurt the other students feelings. Give me a break.

I live just a few miles from here in a neighboring town. Ironically in my town they're thinking of getting rid of advanced/honors classes due to a civil rights challenge brought about by a mexican group. Apparently not enough Mexicans were getting into classes like Honors English so it was concluded that the classes must be racist.

This is why I despise the waves of illegal immigration that are destroying California. These immigrants are not here just to work hard and to contribute, they look at us with envy and want to drag our children down to their level. I can't think of anything more petty than trying to take away an honors program for all students just because not enough of a particular color happen to sign up. Why should all children be penalized because some have bad parents?

Fortunately diversity requirements seem to have drawn the line prior to serious mental illnesses, and specific manners of handicap.

Since the left has no plan or concept of HOW to promote and encourage excellence, all they can do is ensure that they bring down the successful. It's no different in education than it is in economics for them.

They're lazy and pathetic and would rather mooch than excel or encourage excellence. Their REAL problem is, once they've squashed excellence to the point of obsolescence, there's nothing left for them to mooch.

And they're so blind that they don't even see that...the left is ALWAYS blind to the unintended consequences of their actions. They'd make great chess opponent if you wanted to ensure your victory.
