Smallpox I: U.S. Residents to Be Denied Vaccine if CDC Plan Is Adopted
Global Security Newswire ^ | June 26, 2002 | Mike Nartker

........

The CDC does not expect a high level of public demand for the vaccine prior to an outbreak, Grant said. Mohammad Akhter, executive director of the American Public Health Association, agreed and said there has not been the same level of demand from the public for the smallpox vaccine as there was for Cipro during last year’s anthrax attacks.

This article had a nasty copyright notice, so you will have to follow the links to read it. This article is published on the web in a newsletter called the Global Security Newswire on the NTI (Nuclear Threat Initiative) website Apparently NTI is a foundation set up by Ted Turner and run by former Senator Sam Nun. Kind of interesting to know that one of the major expert advocates against allowing voluntary vaccination prior to an outbreak of smallpox is named "Mohammad".

First, I didn't even post that information on this site. It was already posted on the web. Second, there have been numerous posts on smallpox posted in the last several weeks. Third, if you care to read them, the number quoted was obsolete several months before this article was published. Aventis Pasteur found about 85 million doses of smallpox vaccine in its freezer. Four, there have already been studies on diluting these vaccines 5:1 and 10:1 with good results. This means in an emergency, we already have enough doses for 500 million to 1 billion people. Five, the New York Times published a story on July 9 about a Yale-MIT study that said a ring vaccination strategy in the case of an outbreak would cause 110,000 deaths. That study also said that if 40% of the population were voluntarily vaccinated prior to any outbreak, only 450 people would die if mass vaccinations were started immediately after the detection of an outbreak. Six, the current policy is to only vaccinate 500,000 emergency and health care workers.

The guys in the white coats say that the vaccine "wears off" after 10 years providing little to no protection - only an improved reaction to additional booster shots.

Shoot -- open this up to the free market. I'll bet you have enough vaccine within a year or two. Could create a whole new market. After all, there is still the threat from Monkey Pox, Camel Pox, AIDS, etc. etc. If people start buying vaccines then there will be more funding for additional research.

I just did my Zogby online monthly email poll, and for the first time they're polling on a willingness to receive a smallpox vaccination.
Probably doesn't mean a darned thing, but they are asking.

Akhter agreed with the CDC’s decision not to provide the vaccine to physicians, adding that the focus should not be on individuals.

“We need to protect our community,” Akhter said. “We need to protect our nation.”

What kind of nonsensical argument is this? A community is just a group of individuals. Vaccinating a significant proportion of the USA's individuals voluntarily, in advance, would slow down the progress, and thus the damage, a Smallpox release could do. His logic is crazy, talk about Socialist thinking!

Ring vaccination, however, would not be able to adequately halt the rapid spread of smallpox once an outbreak began, Pena said.

“If you can remember seven people you had contact with in the last few days, I’d be surprised,” he said.

This is true, its a shame the CDC don't deal in clear thinking logical arguments.

Its time the government released the Smallpox vaccine for voluntary administration.
