PAKISTAN'S NEXT TEST

Pakistan's government showed considerable courage by going ahead with the trial of four Islamic militants accused of murdering Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Yesterday, they were convicted - and the ringleader sentenced to death.

But it remains to be seen whether Islamabad can stand firm against the expected backlash and see to it that the sentences are carried out.
