In previous years Intel has tried to establish lasting trademarks for letters of the alphabet - "i" - and for numbers e.g. 486.

How about Porsche's use of the "9xx" series... 911, 928, 944, 968, etc.?
Is that not a trademark?

I don't believe so. Only the word Porsche itself is a trademark.
