"They were seeking to succeed state Sen. Warren E. Barry, a Fairfax Republican who resigned in June to accept a position on the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board in the administration of Gov. Mark R. Warner, a DemonRAT. Mr. Barry, whose 37th District covers the southwestern portion of Fairfax County, voiced support last month for Mrs. Belter and the referendum."

No kidding, Mud. The entire Commonwealth is better off tonight. I'd forgotten that RINO Barry had worked for the election of Dem candidate Mark Warner. I trust Barry's enjoying his tenure as head of the ABC stores. I look forward to having another conservative in Richmond.

Congrats to Ken and the Fairfax GOP, from a Loudoun resident. I'm hoping this win is a big indicator that the sales tax referendum will go down in flames in November.

Speaking of which, did anyone here RINO Barry's comments on WMAL news about how he's sorry that Cuccinelli won, and he doesn't think that Ken will be able to adequately represent the district in Richmond because he's "too conservative"? Obviously the voters didn't think so!

I missed Barry's comments on WMAL. I expect RINO Barry to announce any day now that he's joining the Democratic party. His son ran as a Democrat for Sheriff, and he's now part of a Democratic administration. He campaigns for higher taxes and more spending, and has now campaigned for two Democratic candidates. The conservative wing of the Virginia GOP is growing with ethnic minorities as we purge the RINOs like Barry; evidenced by a black conservative Republican woman, Dr. Linda Horsey, getting 21% of the vote in the district that includes the City of Norfolk. I'm optimistic about the future of the party.

Did you see Cuccinelli's position on gun rights posted on the background thread? He strongly supports, among other things, Project Exile which has been riduculed here. Do you have any thoughts on the issue? I know you're active in 2nd Amendment issues.

Tim Hugo is the guy who will run for the House 40 seat once Jay O'Brien moves to the Senate. Election will likely be late Dec/early Jan.

16% was actually a higher turnout than predicted by either side. 10% seemed to be the consensus estimate.

I've heard the name Tim Hugo, but I don't know him. I think he ran before against one of those entrenched Dems. A Google search shows he's a lobbyist for tech companies and very active. Thanks for the info.

"Mike Thompson was classy in his active support for Ken"

What the hell did Thompson do to help Cuccinelli? I don't live in the district but I've heard thru the grapevine that Thompson and all of his "conservative" primary supporters didn't do much of anything to help Cuccinelli. However, Social Conservatives from all over NOVA busted their fannies to get the job done.

Those tax and spend scheme RINOs must really be POed!

Let's see...Thompson gave $$ for Ken's campaign, sent a letter to his supporters in the last week giving full support to Ken.

Calling Thompson a RINO is really a joke. I'm pretty sure his positions were slightly to the left of Cuccinelli. He opposes the tax referendum but would have voted to let it happen(just like Jay O'Brien) & opposes abortion except in cases of incest & rape.

Yes, social conservatives from all over NoVa did fight for Ken. I think Ken's lack of "home-grown" support from Fairfax has more to do with the nature of the county GOP than with the hurt feelings of the primary losers.

Cuccinelli email:

For any that are interested, the swearing in ceremony is scheduled to take place in the Senate Chamber in Richmond on Monday, August 19th at high noon. All are invited, but there are 90 seats in the gallery, so we need to know how many of you are coming.

You have all done so much to make this win a reality, and I understand that taking a work day off for such an occassion is not something that everyone can do, but for those that can make it, I would be honored to have you there and representing all of those that worked so hard but that cannot come to Richmond on the 19th.

Please RSVP as soon as possible.

Thank you again for your steadfast support!

Sincerely,

Ken Cuccinelli

I hope she takes a close look at where her union dues go.

We're a "right to work" state. The NEA and VEA (Virginia Education Association) cannot compel any dues from teachers (no collective bargaining agreement).

Though, unfortunately, the evil unions are attempting to spread their tentacles everywhere. Luckily, we are a conservative state and only the most moronic leftists actively support them.

Case in point: one day, in the faculty workroom, I was telling the teachers about a news article on a pair of criminals who couldn't be fired by the NYC school system, despite recent felony convictions. Another teacher (the school's VEA rep) said, smugly, "That's what happens when you have a strong union!" We all just looked at her like she was an idiot...

How much money? I'd like to see a copy of the letter sent out by Thompson the LAST WEEK of the campaign; from what I hear it says that Thompson is also pro-life and he hints at a run in next years Senate election. SHOULDN'T THOMPSON HAVE SENT THAT LETTER(supporting Cuccinelli) THE WEEK AFTER HE LOST? That would have been the Republican thing to do.

I didn't call Thompson a RINO, I refer to most of the elected Fairfax GOP Senators and Delegates (as well as John Warner, Tom Davis and Frank"I have no position but I will vote for the tax referendum" Wolf) who are hell bent on raising my taxes because they are too chickenshit to go to Richmond and take back more of the Tax$ NOVA sends there to begin with!

Forgive my tardy reply, I just got back from a week of vacation.

Okay, my turn. I just got back from a week of vacation, at the rate we're moving this thread will last until Christmas.

According to www.vpap.org, Thompson gave $125 on July 22. He was at the fundraiser w/Senator Allen.

I have not seen the actual letter, I was merely relaying what I had heard from someone who had.

As for the RINO clarification, no argument here. If the Fairfax GOP can rebound from years of decay then they can start to pick & choose targets to take out.

Tom Davis is another story though. He is first and foremost a political creature, no bound by doctrine but by votes. He wants to win elections. I think Ligeia explained Davis pretty well in a different thread.

RPV email: According to this article in the Virginia Pilot, several advisors to the Governor privately say that “the fate of the referendums will provide a valuable gauge of whether Virginians would be receptive to other tax increases to protect services such as education and public safety.” So, does this mean if the tax referendum is passed, we can count on other tax increases proposed by a Governor who promised not to raise our taxes? Where does it stop?

At least in this article, Del. Vince Callahan chairman of the House Appropriations Committee says, ``I just don't see tax increases happening.'' We have to keep the pressure on. article in the Virginian-Pilot
