To: Non-Sequitur
Thanks for the mention. My Dad, who is in a nursing home in California was a mess cook in the Army. He has pictures of Gaudalcanal, as well as a handwritten and illustrated book of the campaign there. I remember reading it as a small child and always wanted to talk to him about it, but he kept it to himself.

Another bump for a WWII Dad. My father was in the Navy and spent the war in the South Pacific.

He had fond memories of the Navy but also knew life on a ship was no picnic even for officers. When I considered entering the Navy ROTC he talked me out of it. (My eyes weren't good enough to let me fly anyway.)
