All the more reason for studying it. Maybe more Americans should have read Mein Kampf in 1941 and earlier. Know thine enemies! The best antidote to Islamism, a ghastly ideology which does not stand up to scrutiny, is, well, scrutiny.

I happen to agree with you there, pttttt!

Since 9/11 I’ve been absolutely appalled by the rampant ignorance concerning islam. From W’s “religion of peace” jaw dropper to the seemingly ubiquitous “it’s [the koran] just like the Bible”. Exactly where in the Bible does it say that a Christian should "Kill the disbelievers wherever we find them" (Koran 2:191) or "Not to make friendship with Jews and Christians" (Koran 5:51)?

While the animals who committed the atrocities of 9-11 and I likely would agree on almost nothing, we are in full agreement that they were putting the tenants of their religion into practice.

My one concern with this is that it’s being done at a university and there’s a good likelihood that the Yusaf Ali translation will be substituted with the Penguin Pocket Classics version-

"Fight and slay the Pagans, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem" (Koran 9:5) [Yusaf Ali]
“Welcome and love Christians and Jews, help them in their struggles and walk with them” (Koran 9:5) [Owl_Eagle paraphrasing his Penguin koran]

”Guns Before Butter.”

I wonder whether the UNC administration will be assigning the Bible for next year's reading assignment. And whether the ACLU would keep quiet about it.

You do raise a serious point, about knowing one's enemies. However, given the politically correct atmosphere at UNC, I suspect that this course will feature a respectful, rather than critical, look at Islam. In fact, it is entirely possible that the PC Left could bring "hate speech" charges against students who criticized Islam.

Know thine enemies!

If that was what this was about then I would agree too. Unfortunately the book the incoming freshmen were assigned leaves out all the quotes about killing infidel, etc. Nothing but pro-islam propaganda is in the book.

thanks for the post. anyone who read mein kampf prior to 1940 would not have been surprised that world war ii and the holocaust happened. (neville, if you ever come back to life, have i got a book for you...)

unfortunately, i am not too sure that the religion of islam is being followed by islamic fundamentalists, and for that matter, most of the islamic people. two cases in point. first, louis farrakhan leads an islamic sect here in america whose stated goal is the overthrow of the american government and the cultural enslavement of whites. that does not sound like a message of peace is being taught.

second, all the muslim clerics i have heard have been appoligists for the arab nations, the islamic people and the events of 9-11. hate is tolerated, in fact it is enabled by these leaders.

the koran may teach peace, but the islamic nation does not seem bound to these teachings. these poor students will not 'know thine enemy' by reading the koran.

a better approach would be to compare islam with christianity. the differences, once highlighted, show that islam can only be trouble.
