A Palestinian who had infiltrated Israel from the northern Gaza Strip was shot dead by Israeli troops on Saturday, an army spokesman said.
The man was carrying hand grenades which exploded when the soldiers shot him on the border between the Nir Am kibbutz and the Palestinian town of Beit Hanun, the spokesman said, without naming the dead man.
Palestinian security sources named the man as Mohammad Baker al-Masri, a 25-year-old militant of the Islamist group Hamas.
However Palestinian witnesses gave a different account of his death, saying he was burying a bomb in the border area when troops spotted him.
A tank arrived on the scene of the ensuing exchange of fire, the witnesses said, adding that they heard a big explosion and saw flames coming out of the tank.
2 Lebanese infiltrators captured by Israeli army
The Times of India/AFP, Saturday Augustus 10 2002
KIRYAT SHEMONA: Two suspected members of Lebanon's fundamentalist Shiite militia Hezbollah were arrested infiltrating Israeli territory on Friday, sources close to the Israeli army said.
The men were not armed and were caught by the army near Israel's northern border with Lebanon, the sources said.
According to initial results of their questioning, they are suspected of being members of Hezbollah seeking to locate potential military targets.
In Lebanon, police confirmed two men had crossed the border fence from the Birkit Naqqar area leading into the Shebaa Farms -- a disputed area controlled by the Jewish state since 1967.
Following the incident, the Israeli army bombarded Birkit Naqqar, firing a total of five rockets, police said. There were no reports of injuries.
Three Lebanese illegally entered northern Israel from southern Lebanon in three separate incidents in July.
Lebanese authorities do not control the borders with Israel, refusing to "offer security" to Israel against the activities of Hezbollah.

However Palestinian witnesses gave a different account of his death, saying he was burying a bomb in the border area when troops spotted him. So exactly why was this clown supposedly burying a bomb?
To: knighthawk
In 1974 Palestinian terrorsts invaded Kiryat Shemona and murdered nine children and nine adults. Some of the children were swung by their heels and had their heads bashed into trees. One mother hiding inside her home, held her hand so tightly over the mouth of her little girl that the child died. This was the mother of one of the children murdered outside. The father was murdered as well. The terrorists were unable to escape and were killed by Israeli forces.

I can't believe the world is fooled into thinking they are doing this because 'it's their only means of defence'. They are just sadistic child killers.

The way to stop this is to kill the terrorists, and terrorize or elimanate their backers.

If he was burying the bomb near the road or near railroad tracks, he was going to blow up a bus or a train.
Or he could have been stashing it for later use.

Sad, but true.

And like many of the so called elite jewish people in Germany, there are those jewish people now blaming Israel for the terror attacks. Seems NOTHING has been learned from history.

It will, IMO, be so until the liberal talking heads shut up and let Israel do what it needs to do to protect it's people. Whether people realize it or not, the opinions of the leadership in this country have a great impact on events and decisions in Israel and the Middle East. Our President made a bold stride by tacitly giving his approval to Israel's response to these attacks by saying, "Israel must defend herself.". Take for example Ariel Sharon's upcoming visit to the great state of Florida. He let it be known that he will be meeting with Gov. Jeb Bush, and not with the democratic leadership of that state. He said, "I know who my friends are.". What kind of message do you think that sends to the Jewish voters of Florida?
