The solution to the recent Microsoft "anti-trust" litigation would have been to simply require that MS open-source the IE browser and plug-ins.

Releasing its source code apparently hasn't helped Netscape at all. In all probability, releasing IE sources would cement its lead just that much more.

But you could run it on decent OS's, like Linux.....

That's why it would have been a "good" solution. Remember most of the "monopoly solutions" have the real goal of destroying MS.

If it isn't released under a license similar to the GPL, QPL or BSD license it's irrelevent. It would simply make creating new hacks that much easier. The only thing that has saved Microsoft's ass is that IE's source isn't open. The Mozilla team doesn't have that luxury. They have to be a bit more conscious of the potential problems with releasing bad code.
