Six men have been charged in the United States with helping Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network.
They include an American citizen who allegedly tried to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon.
A federal grand jury in Seattle indicted Earnest James Ujaama, a well-known Islamic activist, for conspiring to set up the camp and promote "violent jihad", or holy war, against the US.
Reports claimed Ujaama, 36, was once renowned for his work with the poor. His contribution was so highly regarded that Washington state declared June 10, 1994, 'James Ujaama Day'.
Suspects
He was born James Earnest Thompson but later converted to Islam and changed his name.
He is reported to have travelled to London's Finsbury Park mosque, which has been linked to a number of terrorist suspects, and the indictment claims he refers to himself as a bin Laden 'hitman'.
Through a statement, Ujaama said: "I am innocent of any wrongdoing and am fully prepared to face my accusers and defend myself in a court of law."
In Detroit, five men, all Arab nationals, were accused of forming a terror cell to plan attacks on targets in the United States and abroad.
Plans
The indictment said they used a "coded form of communication" to speak about terrorist plans and were "involved in plans to obtain weaponry to benefit operatives overseas."
Four of them have been in custody for almost a year, since a raid on a Detroit apartment shortly after September 11 last year.
The charges are the first of many following FBI investigations into support for terror organisations like al Qaeda and Hezbollah.
