Like I speculated earlier, my take is that the guy bought a massive short position, had never done any trend analysis, didn't know the support levels of the stocks he had in play, and took it in the shorts.

You can't "buy" a massive short postion ;-) You can put it on, lay down a line, fade the market, but you can only "cover" a short ;-)
