Iran denounces weapons shipment scam as Israeli propaganda
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

German claims that an impounded Israeli shipment of military equipment was headed for Iran are "ridiculous," Iran said Thursday.

German customs officials in Hamburg have impounded the ship Zim Antwerp I, which was sailing for an Israeli shipping company under a Panamanian flag.

The ship carried two containers of treads for armored personnel carriers that were to be transferred to another freighter for transport to Iran, Hamburg customs authorities said in a statement.

On Thursday, the customs officials said the two containers would be sent back to Israel as German law forbids the export of military equipment to Iran.

In Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi denied that Iran was the destination, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has no sort of relationship with the Zionist regime and such propaganda suggests that Israel considers the world's public to be naive," the news agency quoted Asefi as saying.

Up In Arms
Another arms-sale scandal may be in the making, and the question is: Did or didn't arms dealer Avichai Weinstein know where his rubber treads for armed personnel carriers were really headed? German custom officials discovered last month that an Israeli shipment of military equipment was headed for Iran, and sent it back to Israel. The cargo is owned by an Israeli company headed by Netanya resident Avichai Weinstein, who denies the German officials' claims. He says that he sold the goods to a German company for delivery to Thailand. Weinstein, who will probably be questioned by police tomorrow, was suspected three years ago of trying to sell military parts to Iran, but the case was closed

Ha! Maybe these arms were headed to the anti-government forces in Iran. I think we will be going after Iran when we are finished with Iraq.
